O.K. Gannimal et al, here goes for first post ever: In the course of redoing our down spouts & drainage on the North street-facing side of our 1940's cape codish house, I ripped out foundation plantings of huge rhodies (moved two to a back yard berm; tossed the ugly ones) put an 18 inch margin of river rock around the foundation (now washing windows, hanging holiday lights, painting, etc not so painful) and put in a curved walkway in pavers between the house & the lawn with dogwood tree. Cuz the bed is 3 to 4 ft in depth (plus the river rock near the house)and the cuz the path is close by, and since I want to be able to see out of my low windows (Pacific NW; we need all the light we can get) my foundation beds are smaller than recommended in this thread, but due to the curving path, and the prortionately small rest of the front yard, it works. I am now having fun selecting smaller and some dainty plants. I have some dwarf (so far) pieris japonica, a few sky pencil barberries for punctuation, some lower spready barberry, a bunch of hellebores (I love the big foliage, and the blooms knock me out in winter.) I have several daphnes and sarcococca for heavenly scent, some hostas, some daylilies, various bulbs (narcissus for spring & liles for summer; some trillium too) and probably too much crocosmia, but I love the strappy foliage, and the orange blooms, and it is easy to rip out.) There are calla lilies too (also remaining for the original plantings; cool foliage & blooms, and I rip out what gets to be too much.) Some primroses, a spirea, some carex and too much japanese anenome (on its way out as I purchase choice evergreens & they fill in.) I have seasonal things and evergreens in pots near the front & kitchen doors. All in all, a pleasant walkway with some bloom & fragrance. i am thinking it would be fun for you to plant evergreen & fragrant plants as well near your walkway. Since you have a large front yard with alot of open green space, perhaps you could plant some larger things, like choisya or viburnum. As for hydrangeas, I love all of mine. The oakleaf one in front (across the walkway) looks pretty fab right now. As far as a small landscape tree, I love my stewartia pseudocamelia. It's leaves are hot pink/reddish/orange now--stunning. It gets white bloms in spring/early summer, and as it matures the bark is turning peely/camouflage. Oh, can you grow sasanqua camellias where you are? I love all camellias (even tho most aren't scented) but the blooms get wrecked pretty quickly here by rain. On a final note, fragrant & diminutive plants really fascinate kids; maybe yours could turn into gardeners?) Good luck!

nothing I have done but, the previous owner of our home obviously loved spreading plants!! we have approx 15 of them taking over! some I can lift like a carpet? We have absolutely no idea what they all are, as we are not flower people, some are lovely, some horrid! as we are new into the house in September, we are letting things grow and trying to Identify or decide if we like them. I am glad we have done this as I have found, strawberies, raspberries and Blackberry bushes, so far, and I know many people hate, blackberries, as they are invasive, but I love them! one man's meat is anothers poison! and was extatic today when I found them growing in the woods behind our house as well, as they are my Favorite fruit. I used to walk around my village for weeks during the harvesting season for blackberries and alway filled my freezer, never any left by Feb, yummy! yummy! our plan is to lay most of the areas with the creeping stuff (haha) to lawn which is more invasive but will at least let us be able to cut it!!

tree_oracle, and all: I'm staying at a place in Clinton, MA conducting field work, and I have never in my life seen wild black/raspberries and poison ivy grow with such vigor and in such large amounts. Native or not, these pests are literally awful. Various trails around "protected forests" like the Rocky Pond conservation area have become completely overgrown with thorny vines and terrifying toxicodendron. Rather than allow native plants to thrive because of the lack of human intervention in the area, all it does is create a safe haven for ticks and mosquitos (read: EEE, West Nile, and Lyme). I side with tree_oracle... to kill the burning bush or allow it to thrive? On one hand, the burning bush does not create rashes, an industry of skin protection, necessary vaccination and pest prevention; on the other hand the burning bush is a "nuisance" because it grows vigorously and shoots suckers up around it's root ball. If the plant suckers and seeds SO EASILY, why not suggest that your neighbor root a few suckers elsewhere in his/her yard and allow you to yank the problematic bush? I second the idea of planting a surrounding border of vigorous annuals which you'll expect to turn over each year. You'll prevent the burning bush from spreading outside of the halo of annuals, and at least you can block it from view with taller flowers.
