Please help!!! My natives are yellowing

Hi

I am new to this forum and also to native gardening and any help would be truly appreciated.

I have bought a selection of natives that are suitable to my area,(We wake to frosts most mornings) and I have noticed that quite a few of my native plants have yellowing leaves. Most of the plants are forms of grevillea's There are many areas that I have planted 2 identical plants side by side and one of them will get yellowing leaves and stunted growth and the other is going great guns. Any ideas what may be causing my problems??

Hi there and Welcome .. I have a few Grevillea banksii growing and the leaves go yellow this time of the year, but side my side and stunted growth I don't know strange that one plant is infected but not the other..

I know root rot causes yellowing of leaves and stunted growth do they have good drainage and are not waterlogged, not that we get enough rain here to kill anything though I did lose a few plants to that a few months ago.. Do a search on root rot and you may be able to find a answer to your problem..

I had the same problem with a Banksia marginata that was a very sickly yellow for a long time. It turned out to be magnesium defficient.

Try a little magnesium on your yellowing natives and see if that solves the problem.

Thank you for responding. After spending a few hours reading through many articles on palm diseases, deficiencies and parasites, I believe you are right. I also found an article that mentioned yellow/brown spotting as an indication that I may be over watering. I'm not sure how often you water or how long they have been in the ground, but if the spots are spreading it could be over watering. I You've bought some great palms. I got mine at Home Depot. Great deal. Do you mind telling me where the nursery is? I'd love to buy several more.

Can you verify what you actually planted? On the bag label there should be information on the type of seed and percentages in the container. It's likely you have a ryegrass mix which grew very well then died. You are about 30 miles west of me. If you want to establish & maintain a fescue lawn it will take some work. If fescue is your goal, you need to plant it in the Fall (late October/early November). You should also invest in a hose end timer and enough sprinklers to water your entire yard without you having to physically move them around during your watering day(s). You should also measure your water output to ensure that the set-up you choose has the desired output/coverage. When taking the advice of MINIMUM of 1" of water per week at once, it is truly the MINIMUM in our area. With temps 90-100 all summer and only 2" of rain total from April to November, you are going to need more than the minimum to maintain your lawn. You will also need to overseed your lawn every year to replenish the grass that dies off during the summer.

When you say that this is 'a true raised planter bed', am I correct in understanding that this is like a table filled with growing medium? If so, I think the problem might be how you consider the style of gardening. In essence, you are growing in a very large container. It's perfectly fine, it just needs to be treated like a container garden. Even if it's just a high raised bed, with the drainage you have, combined with the medium you used, I would switch to a soluble fertilizer. Since everything you describe is organic, try to find a product like fish emulsion (there are many others.) The problem with the fertilizer you seem to describe, is that most 'organic fertilizers' are formulated to work in concert with inground soil organisms. You are above the ground, so your fertilizer isn't releasing. A complete (all nutrients, not just NPK) soluble fertilizer of your preference should correct the problems you're seeing. You'll want to use the fertilizer as needed, but many container gardeners find that feeding once a week, or once every 2 weeks - as the label recommends - is a good schedule. That may require adjusting, and you'll just need to watch the plants and see how they respond.

mobuddy89 These days I obsess about what other colors our home would be. There are a few more brown beams in the back of the complex and the same brown trim over the garage doors! If the brown stain doesn't work we could definitely layer with deeper colors! torreykm I think talavera elements could work in our area. I have thought it would be nice to really bring out the Spanish character of the home but in a very updated way? I'll have to peruse Houzz and see whats out there! :) Beth H. Thanks! You know, I looked for a wood "conditioner" and wasn't able to find one at HD, Lowes or Rockler that was exterior grade?! But Rockler recommended the Zinsser Bullseye clear sander coat as a base layer. Its very clear and watery stuff. The UV varnish I picked up is also the Zars exterior UV grade. Wish I'd known about the other products- but will see how the Zars holds up this time around. For sure will take your advice and do no less than 3 coats! Your garden is amazing!!

If it's a uniform yellow, the problem is probably a lack of iron, which can be solved with an application of iron chelates.

For future plantings, what about considering choosing from local natives? These are adapted to your soil, and you would therefore have no need to "correct" it - ie alter it to resemble soil from elsewhere - to make them grow well. Many of us would LOVE to be able to grow all those wonderful flowers that we see when visiting Girraween National Park, but have to "correct" our soil like mad to achieve it, and even then we end up with plants which are short-lived because they are never really happy in the different soil.
I believe there is a branch of the Sociey for Growing Australian Plants in Stanthorpe which should be a good source of information and plants. I seem to remember a very good nursery in Eukey road, too. I remember they had that local Hardenbergia with the black leaves...
