Australian Native Plants

Unknown possibly Australian plant needs ID

Hello all,

I'm a great fan of Australian flora and last year I got some seeds from ebay that were mistakenly sent as eucalyptus citriodora. They did start up at a very good germination rate and they're growing fast, problem is... I have no idea what plants they are. The flowers look like short nicotiana blooms but that's all I can find resemblance to. They have broad leaves and develop a rather strong main body (could also develop beyond bush and actually be trees) with rather fast growth rate. Any ideas?

Goodness, you couldn't get further from a Eucalyptus, could you? It looks interesting, but wonder how the seeds got so mixed up.
There are still some suppliers for Australian native who do seed in small amounts, (not all do mail order overseas, or they charge for a phyto, or have a minimum order amount) but sometimes they may be more reliable depending on what you want.

Carefully compare the leaves and the flowers. Shapes, sizes, and colors and that will help you to be sure. There are some look a likes that are fairly close but they may have larger flowers or slightly different petal shapes, etc. Leaves on mine vary somewhat between smooth or jagged edged, light or much darker with veining depending on time of year or where I have it placed on my shelves, age, etc. The only thing that really makes me wonder with yours is the flowers seem slightly cup shaped. Vanilla Trail has slightly puffed out rounded flowers with the center being higher set than the edges. Also there's no trace of purple in it, though that could be your photo color could be off a little. Whatever it is, enjoy it! I'd suggest you Google, Google, Google for pink double trailers and eye those flowers and leaves very closely. You can always send a photo to the Violet Barn as well and ask their opinion. If in doubt, just call it a NOID and don't worry about it. No shame in it. I have a lovely NOID or two myself.

Yes, those flowers are certainly Nicotiana of some sort. There are Australian Nicotianas, but if it's rustica, it's not an Australian native plant.
And as Alison says it's not going to do the job of a Eucalyptus for you! (and perhaps that ebay supplier is not someone reliable? I hope you didn't pay much for those seeds.)
