Slugs and snails

Had an idea for repelling slugs and snails after reading that grit and eggshells around plants is a remedy. Remove the narrow serrated metal strip from cling wrap and foil packaging and bend into a circle around young plants. Not sure if it really works yet as I had put slug pellets down first before I thought doing of this.

What are the results on your ingenious little device? It sounded like a good idea to me, but I was thinking I would have to use an awful lot of cling-film to protect the garden! Lol.

I Think it may be working but not really sure, as I said in my post that I had put slug pellets down first. I agree one would have to use lots of cling film to protect your garden but I am a bit of a horder myself and I often ripped off these metal strips in the past thinking they may come in for some craft project or other so had a few on hand. As most of my plants are in pots I would need fewer than I would for plants in the garden.

Hi Cora! Yes, a 10% ammonia solution in a spray bottle is by far the easiest to kill slugs on sight without damaging your plants or soil. (You should not use a salt shaker.) Just take any old spray bottle and put in 9 parts water, 1 part household ammonia (non-sudsing kind, if you have it). You may read about stronger solutions (more ammonia), but it is not necessary. Since you will be spraying the slugs as you see them, you will also see that a 10% solution works. Have fun! Carol

Hi Devon, Personally, I love Colorado and think it's a great place to live. This time of year, (Dec. Jan. Feb.) looking at weather.com, the average high temps are about 45 degrees F., with the average lows about 17 degrees F. I live in Westminster, about 20 miles north of Denver. It's often very breezy, or downright windy, so wind chill DOES play into perceived temperatures a lot. Generally an arid environment, so slugs are almost never a big issue here. We have small toads and a lot of garter snakes in the area, so I'm thinking they make a difference as well in controlling slugs here. yeah a lot of the methods only partly work some of the time. so its like...lessening the damage, not completely eliminating it. one thing that does work - seaweed. only, unfortunately, it is very salty and the salts arent that great for getting in your soil, but its those very salts that the slugs hate. partially rinsed off theres still lots of salt on the seaweed, and it is a good amendment once it breaks down and releases minerals and nutrients.... another thing is placing boards around the garden. the slugs love these, and use them to hide underneath...they munch your plants at night (f*@#ers!!!!) and then when the sun comes up they go to sleep under the boards, usually stuck upsidedown to the bottom. so then every day if you go out and lift up the boards, you can get a couple + off each board on a daily basis. beer traps also work.

We have lots of slugs in East Hawaii, rainfall avg 130" per year. Deadline works but it's pretty toxic. Sluggo is non-toxic but requires many repeated applications.

Copper barriers work well, for the dedicated organic gardener. You have to be sure that there is no opening for slugs or snails to bypass the copper. I think there is some electrical conduction that repels them. Copper flashing is expensive. Scraps from copper metal roofing would be the best, but good luck!. Copper tape, about 1" wide, is used to band nursery bench legs. I have put the tape on the edge of aluminum flashing (comparitively cheaper) with some success. There is some investment, but it lasts a long time.

Thanks mikeclark for your emlightening tips regarding slugs and snails. Although I only have a few plants in pots I will follow some of your advice.
