Check out the United Peafowl Associations' website for tons of pea info...if you Google it it'll come up. Peacocks are going to wander off in search of ladies, so I'd get him a hen if you are serious about keeping peafowl. Peacocks are LOUD, so be prepared. They are also terrific flyers, leapers, tree climbers, etc. They REALLY like to scramble on top of your neighbor's SUV...the one with the expensive paint job. They will also prefer to live in your neighbor's yard... I had several peas for a couple of years, after that they steadily wandered until they dissapeared completely. While they lived with us, we used the same Ivermectin we use on our chickens to worm them. The peas resisted this procedure, defending themselves by way of hearty clawing and pooping copiously on my DH. The reason you shouldn't run turkeys and peas together is because turkeys' parasites can spread to the peas. Despite all this, peas are wonderful and someday I'll have them again...enjoy your peafowl! :) Velvet ~:>

I see very few comments about peacocks and your neighbors gardens. My neighbor has decided that free ranging his flock is a good idea in our area, sadly it is not. We are in a farming community and properties are used for growing food, raising food/animals et etc. Some enjoy growing flowers and having good sized yards for the kids and dogs to run wild in. Previously around here and other nearby communities, owners of pea fowl have either lost track of their birds or just abandoned them outright..eventually they become a issue with other people and get eradicated simply because they have become a pest. Since my neighbor has owned them before, I am hard pressed to think he didn't know how destructive they are. They have continuously ripped out young plants and shredded landscaping fabric in my garden beds. Free ranging these birds also means that they can holler right in your neighbors open windows during warm months too. Not so nice for people who have a hard time staying asleep and working a regular professional job. Personally, they are pretty to look at and that's about it, I don't consider these birds to be farm material as they are def not vegetation friendly. If you are thinking about having these birds, be considerate of others and do not free range them.

Well he seems fond of raiding the cat's dishes. Loves the dry cat food....pretty much the same as the chickens. He really doesn't make much noise yet, maybe when he gets more comfortable. He is definitely leery of me and doesn't let me get too close.

When I first read this post, I thought maybe peacocks would cause the same damage as chickens (digging up new plants/seedlings), but after searching online, I see that they can really do some damage! I didn't find any specific lists, but part way down this article, there are some good plant choices, as well as a natural deterrent. But, from what I've read, if there's a female, and she feels like nesting, she might find the middle of a nice garden bed the perfect place to do so. :( I know I've had to find a way to get chickens out of my yard because of the damage they do. Running and screaming at them didn't seem to help, and they really like the nice shower from the hose. I will say that the only thing that's worked is a light ping from a BB gun. I don't shoot to kill or injure, and one ping in the rear sends them squawking over the fence. :) Good luck to you! Brenda
