Grevillea Problems

I have 2 grevillea plants that look like they have mould on them. They are growing but they do not look healthy. They are Grevillea 'Limespider' and Grevillea 'Honey Gem'. I do not water them very often, however we have had alot of rain. Both plants have looked sickly from the time they were planted.

I also had 2 grevilleas which died. They were Grevillea'Poorinda Beauty' and Grevillea 'Yamba Sunshine'. These were attacked by a sap sucker variety and thrips. They went from healthy florishing plants to dead within 5 days. I treated them with rogur which saved them a couple of times, but in the end it didnt.

I have other varietys of grevilleas in the garden that are growing really well. All of the grevilleas are less than a year old.

Does anyone have any ideas re the mould and how to prevent my healthy grevilleas from being attacked ie companion plants?

I live in Mackay, QLD.

Mould is a real problem with plants, no matter what type of plant, but it's up to you if you use a chemical treatment,like "RoseShield", Fongarid or Kocide Blue, or go for a non chemical treatment like milk.(To 900ml of cold water add 100ml of milk and spray daily)

You would do well to get as much airflow through the plants, so a prune may be in order.

could it be that black sooty mould?

if so that is commonly caused by scale insect and/or mealy bugs, and they are commonly bought to the plant by ants. mealy bugs easy spot they are little whitish furry bugs around near the growing tip, scale look like hard little pimply lumps also around near the growing tip.

if it is the above you need to control the ants first then make a white oil solution (homemade is easy) and spray the infected area with that after the heat of the sun.

it has been very dry of late that is when ants become more prevelant, also with your callistemon problem because of the dry (low humidity) could it be spider mite? if so they are easy to control just introduce some mist watering around the foliage area to increase humidity keeping a bucket of water under each plant will also help the humidity.

in both cases if the problem is too bad a prune up to remove all infected tip end wouldn't be out of the question, just be sure to destroy the prunings don't compost them or hold them on site.

Grevillea victoriae is likely the species referred to. It is arguably the hardiest for this area and I know of several NW GW members that grow this plant (Ian, chime in please!) and have for a number of years. I just recently (September) acquired one, still in a container. I moved it indoors into a protected location well before our recent bout of cold weather but it is looking definitely peaked at the moment :-) I am fearful but hope for the best. Mercer Island, because it is surrounded by the temperature moderating effect of water, should offer a pretty suitable environment - Colvos Creek Nursery on Vashon (similar situation) has been growing and offering this plant for years. I'd still look for a somewhat protected location with reflected heat, especially if full winter blooming is desired. FWIW, there are other winter flowering plants that will attract hummers and perhaps be easier - certainly hardier - than Grevillea to grow. My Mahonia 'Charity' is in full bloom right now and visited often by hummers. Soon, witch hazels and winter blooming honeysuckles will add to the offerings. Yeah not looking too good Pal, Aussie natives, and I reckon even South Africans, (leucadendrons) can be difficult outside of their native habitat. Having said that both of those like similar conditions; neutral to slightly acidic soil, excellent drainage, and they hate root disturbance. In fact you can easily over care for them - both are very tolerant of dry conditions. Many also are not happy in humid conditions. Lime, by the way, will yellow the leaves and eventually kill them so I reckon the first thing Id do is check the ph. in the soil. Oh, and if you feed them use only fertilisers suitable for Aussie natives, and use it sparingly. Other than that good luck with 'em B.

As I have tried to make clear previously, I don't dispute that high P levels are relatively more toxic to Proteaceae than to other plant families, but I do believe that many rainforest grevilleas are less susceptible than WA species. Again its a relative thing, and I have certainly found one that isn't. A landscape supplier dumped a truckload of potting mix in my garden, close to some trees but about 6 metres from a G. baileyana. Some months afterwards it died, and on digging up the mix it was full of proteoid roots! Retrospectively, I have realised I have had a much higher proteaceae failure rate since using that mix, so I must find out what's in it. The seller told me it was fine for natives - you'd think that at my age I'd know better than to trust a salesperson, but my problem is I can remember back when most of them were trustworthy. Tony

I'm no expert on this, though I've had the same problem. Checking my references, seems it could be caused by borers or minute insects that attack the bark and or sapwood, causing the tree to 'bleed' in defence of the problem. I'd clean away the 'bleeds' and check for holes or other damage to the bark and treat the area with methylated spirits. Metho won't hurt the tree but will kill any pests that are causing the problem.
