felix, for the other seeds I would wait for spring. A friend gave me a seed pod from vigna caracalla. It contained 6 seeds. Following recommendations of the vines forum I used a pin to poke a hole in the side of each seed and soaked them in hot tap water overnight. I put them is small pots covered with one inch of potting soil under grow lights over bottom heat and all six germinated within a week. After they were growing I transplanted them into gallon pots until the nights were above freezing then put two of them in the ground and gave the others away. The bloomed the first year. They set a couple of seed pods each year but the seed are small and not fertile. I think they probably don't get enough heat in my garden. They seem to like lots of sun and heat.

are we talking veggie seeds or plant/flower seeds? here are a couple ideas: don't pull anything until it gets up to 2-3" tall, it should have enough leaves by that time to ID what it is. this is generally safe; there are some weeds that propogate via roots/tubers, but generally, nothing is going to seed till it gets much taller wood skewers ... i use them for veggies, i place one at either end of my row and run a string between if required. if anything is more than 1" out of true with that line, it gets pulled, period. you could do the same thing when seeding flowers and other plants - put skewers everywhere you intend to seed, and plant your seeds less than one inch in front of it. anything to the left, right or behind the skewer should be safe to pull, since you didn't seed there. find weed pages, like THIS ONE, so you're able to identify the weeds that do come up. Walter Reeves has some great resources at his site for here in GA. your local extension office may have literature to help you with this, call them and inquire.

Hey! How you been. Busy as a one armed wallpaper hanger here lately. All is good. The water boo are only 2-3 inches tall... ideal conditions say they can do 30 foot. So I'm hoping for 20foot :-D. Hoping the plant you sent will shoot nice in the spring... it didnt do much since arriving. Lost alot of leaves... looked pretty ill for a while. Seemed to stabalize though. Wacky weather here ...mid 60s and 70s has my moso shooting already... hope thats not a bad thing. My shiroshima never seemed to stall at all... it's been growing all year!! maybe thats the norm... guess I'll have to do a little homework. I'll get some pics together soon. l8r CJ

I don't sow seeds in trays but I have lots of seedlings that come up in the garden. I use a kitchen knife (I buy them from dollar shops and leave them in handy places around the garden - also good for removing weeds) to cut a chunk around the seedling to remove. The soil needs to be moist so that as much as possible adheres to the roots. When seeds are growing in close quarters, it can be a difficult to separate them. If the seedlings are very small, you could try pricking them out with a bamboo skewer or something similar. You could also try removing small clumps of them and replanting as a small clump and then perhaps separate again when they get a bit bigger. However, life is short. Why not just plant them into the garden in small clumps. They probably won't all survive but one or two from each clump should give you a good show.
