Thanks bp that settles it for me. The seed is scheduled to arrive today or tomorrow, and I will get it down ASAP. With a completely new lawn how easy is it to "lightly rake" the spreaded grass seed withouth causing rows? Typically I would scatter the seeds by spreader, then add a very light coat of peat moss and then roll the area to pack it down. I've read a lot of recommendations to get the 1/8"-1/4" depth with a new lawn by after spreading lightly rake, but I can't imagine this wouldn't mess up the uniform spread of the seed? I need every advantage I can get because I'm just now (stupid me) reading about just how long KGB takes to germinate. I'm very scared the seed with barely sprout before we get a cold snap....

The latifolius are a bit rampant, slightly uncontrolled but always reliably perennial. No fragrance but good for putting in jam-jars with nasturtiums in simple posies. Much depends on your type of garden with some peas - they are not particularly neat or refined but if you have a wild (ish) corner, with some handy fencing for the peas to scramble around, then go for it - very easy to grow from seed (ie. not one of those tricky hard-to-germinate ones).

yahooanswers is notorious for poor and bad information. The reasons I have read is that unlike Wikipedia it is not correctable and I have read that responses are cut off sooner than they are here for example providing less time for rebuttal. Sulfuric acid is a relative harsh acid, difficult to work with unless trained in the handling of same. Muriatic acid is also a strong acid. Both are found in serious hardware and building supply stores. I can find no reason for the scarification of Phytolacca americana seed. There does seem to be a lot of interest in finding useful products within these seed.

A pH value of 5.0-5.5 is suitable for most violas. Your light conditions sounds a bit dark as although violas are better than most, it is not exactly a 'shade' shade plant.. at least not in our zone6. Most violas need a cool period to induce flowering, but I have had no problems germinating the seeds (stratification not required). I know a lot of references state so, but I have not found it necerssary (percentage 65-70%). Also, darkness is often said to be required which I have also not found to be necerssary. In fact I usually get better results germinated as surface sown with full light 24/7.
