what will grow in shale?

I hope this makes sense to others. About 3mtrs from my front patio there is a shale cutting, it is about 3mtrs high. It only gets the sun from about mid morning to mid afternoon. In summer the heat that comes off the wall brings the temperature at the front up to 10 degrees higher than out the back. I live about 45klms north of Brisbane but dont know the height above sea level or any of that type of info except to say it is fairly high here. To date I have attempted to grow a number of different climbers on the advise of various nurserymen without success. Yesterday my daughter & I attempted to dig in some garden mix at the base of the wall with the vain hope something might be more likely to grow here. Have searched the Qld Forest sight and it only came up with one plant, a Melaleuca. I would like to have a mix of plants if possible. Any clues?
