I gave up on trying to get iceberg to "head-up." So, plant Bibb types instead. As long as I keep them in partial shade, they stay awhile. But - as previous posts say - now with temps soaring, it's best to get it eaten soon. It helps to have a couple of chickens to eat these little gems that are a bit "past due" so they aren't wasted. I still have some growing in the shade of some very large cabbages that are beginning to head-up. So it may be another week or so before they are gone too. If the cabbages come in soon, we won't miss the lettuce too much - cuz cole slaw isn't bad either. Then comes sauerkraut time. Bejay

Hello! I am new to the forums, and I wish to start a new garden . My money difficulties have not allowed me to buy seeds.. So I turned to the generous people of the Internet. :). What can I do to receive some of your iceberg lettuce seeds?

As soon as a seed germinates, it needs light, or else they get "leggy," which is what you have. You need a light fixture if you are starting them indoors, but you can use any kind of fluorescent light. They are cheap. You can screw a spiral cfl bulb into any inexpensive desk lamp and make it a grow light for seedlings. You will also need a small fan to move air in the room. They need a gentle breeze, or that can also make them leggy. I would just yank those and start over. My best luck with cool weather crops outdoors in hot weather has been under a deck on a concrete pad. They like the shade and the concrete helps keep the roots cool. The small rockwool cube by itself is not great for the hot weather, because it heats up so quickly. If you move them into a system with a lot of mass, like a deep water culture setup, that will help your roots not get too hot.
