Sara, that is probably not a disease unless it came fast and you missed it. Big box stores are notorious for putting any label on any plant, so it could be an ornamental grape, a muscadine grape (which needs a cross-pollinator), or who knows what. If your plant still has some leaves on it I would compare the leaf shape with a Fredonia leaf online - grape leaves are a good ID tool. Overall the odds are high that it is not a Fredonia. Scott

How often are you watering and how much are you applying? You'll want to water deeply but infrequently. This time of year once or twice a week should be adequate as long as the water is soaking down to two feet into the soil. A rule of thumb would be to apply about 6 - 8 gallons of water per vine each time you irrigate. Don't use malathion. It kills beneficials insects as well as pests and you wouldn't want to eat the fruit after applying it. Instead use a product that contains Bacillus thuringensis or "Bt", a bacteria for caterpillar control. It only kills caterpillars and is safe for humans, birds, and fish. The caterpillars are the larval form of a small, skinny black moth. When you see the adults, its time to spray. Bt is the active ingredient in Thuricide and several other products. This cannot be a new thing. I too have a one year old vine, no fruit, lots of vine and millions of those very, very small flying insects. Shake the plant and these things swam out like some kind of plague -- but try to find them on the underside of the leaves -- they are not impossible to see but if they do not move you can miss them, unless they fly, then they are truly evident. Also, the leaves now have brown blotches all over them and some are skeletal -- not sure these flies or whatever, are the cause but there are so many that they cannot be beneficial. But, no one seems to have and answer, like this is something unusual. Strange, no one seems to have a solid answer?

I've found two different beetles really chew huge holes in bigger leaves and eat the youngest ones entirely, and Japanese beetles seem to love mine, though they only recently arrived in my garden and most likely will prove a major problem. Theres' also a much larger beetle with beige overall shells with black spots, which I've never identified, and that one loves them as well. As for not seeing anything, I'd assumer you have looked very carefully, and in some cases those beetles are very good at conceiling themselves and you have to look hard to find them. Nocturnal munchers that live elsewhere during the daylight hours are also good candidates, though most caterpillars will stay with the food source as will the beetles. I'd guess snails love them as well, and those would depart during daytime hours.
