How long ago was the move to QLD now Mary-Anne? I was just up in Palm Cove last week. I have a Brisbane Golden Wattle in my garden, although I must say it's growing quite slowly. You're lucky to have a wattle that flowers more than once a year! I know about Acacia retinodes - 4 Seasons Wattle, but haven't seen it for sale in any nurseries... Serge

Definitely not a tree I'd be trying to grow in a pot. They just want to grow too big, too fast. They need very good drainage, and withstand droughts well, so yes, I'd be cautious about over-watering it. And like most Oz natives, very susceptible to death by phosphorous if you're fertilising it. I've never met an Acacia that liked being fertilised at all, and I've grown dozens of different species over decades. Yours appears to be dying/dead. A. baileyana (Cootamundra Wattle) is also a known environmental thug of native bushland, so if you must grow a wattle in a pot, why not choose a smaller species? I'd highly recommend A. cognata in your situation, but as there are more than 1000 species, a trip to a nursery with a good selection might be a good idea... Acacia cognata in pot

The flooring installer's comments could be due to real world experience with acacia flooring that either wasn't properly kiln dried, wasn't properly acclimated to the home prior to installation or that contracted due to low humidity conditions that occur in hot, dry climates and in cold climates during the winter. Acacia is harder than domestic hardwoods such as oak and maple which increases its durability. It is harder to dry in the kiln; sometimes it requires two passes to get it within target moisture content of 6% to 8%. If it's installed at a higher moisture content, then it could dry and shrink after installation. It is also susceptible to shrinkage in dry winter conditions if you have a gas furnace without a humidifier. Check with the flooring manufacturer's guidelines and ensure that you are able to maintain those conditions year 'round in your home to avoid problems.
