Looking for Jujube(Ziziphus jujuba and NOT Ziziphus mauritiana ) seedlings or root suckers with roots. Wanting to graft known varieties onto these later. If you have any please take look at my exchange list to see if anything interests you. Thanks! Here is a link that might be useful: My exchange list

I had never heard of JuJube, other than Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver, asking "You have any Jujus? They last longer." I got to looking to read more about them. If the name "Jujube" wasn't funny enough for a fruit, then I found that latin name of "Ziziphus" is shared with one of the Lazuli Mob on "Meerkat Manor", which is my favorite show of all times after "The Wire". I could not find anyone selling the Winter Delight variety, but some sellers had unnamed varieties for sale for about $40 Some eBay sellers have JuJube seeds for sale. I just bought 6 seeds for $3 including shipping. I don't know what variety, but it wasn't much money to waste. If you are as interested as I was and want to read more about Jujube fruit, here is the wikipedia link for Ziziphus zizyphus Jujube http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jujube I love odd fruits that we don't normally see in the grocery stores in the U.S. The Jujube fruit are one of the coolest I've seen since I read about Jabuticaba earlier this spring. They look like muscadines that grow on the trunk of the tree rather than on the tips of branches like most other fruit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jabuticaba That still leaves a cold hardy Mayhaw on my list of uncommon fruit I'm looking to grow.

well I too am more than two years late, but I read this post and have to report my results... 70-80% germination with this protocol: 1- Gently tap seed husk with a hammer, increasing in intensity, in middle or slightly towards pointed end until a louder crack is heard on a tap. A small crack should form on ridge of pointed end 2- Gently pry open seed husk at crack with mini screwdriver or continue to lightly tap husk till it starts to split open. 3- 2 seeds should be seen. They are about the size of fat apple seeds and a brownish red color. Remove them carefully. 4- Soak in clean, distilled water heated to about 120 degrees and let cool down. After 24 hours repeat. Do this a few times over 2-3 days. You can then plant the seed and keep at around 70 Degrees or just wrap them in a moist paper towel. 0 cold stratification and 3/4 of my seeds germinated within 4 weeks, and Ill bet the other ones might come on in a few more days now. Hope this helps, I was so pumped to see a seedling popping up 3 months before they would have with traditional stratification of the whole woody husk! Woohoo!

I think they are nice looking. The leaves stay very green even in very hot summers. They seem to thrive in the heat. In the winter the branches are somewhat contorted and interesting. They're very unique and tropical looking, rather like a china berry. They require very little water once established. They sucker, so once a month you cut the suckers; I don't see why it's a big deal. Some of mine have been in the ground 3 years, started as 15 gallon trees, and they're probably 12' high. I have seen a 30' or so tree in Dallas. My kaki persimmons all died back 2-3' after a cold snap late in the spring, and look very ugly with all the dead wood. That wouldn't look good as a centerpiece. I think American Persimmon can get very large, probably over your 30'. They are handsome though, and were not zapped by the cold like the Kaki I have. One advantage I see in Jujube over either persimmon is that I have never seen an insect eat a jujube leave, while I do have some problems with psylla and other eating persimmon leaves.
