Derek, I have used Semaspore Bait for the past two years, which is basically the same as Nolo Bait. It is approved for organic use, and would probably work well for Carrie and Tiffy, who both have fairly large properties. I live on a small lot with several empty lots and open spaces surrounding my property, so even though it decreases the numbers of young grasshoppers in my garden in the spring, the full sized ones move onto my property from those open areas once they are large enough and the fields start to dry up from the summer heat. The bait only works when they are 1/4" to 1/2" in size, so it has no affect on the mature grasshoppers that invade my garden in June and July. I guess I may have to buy enough to treat those open areas if I want to have any success with that method. I'm glad to know that it's affective given the right circumstances though. Bonnie

Hey Tom! Could ya give a follow-up on this experiment? The gardens I tend around the little cafe just had a major hatch and I've been catching and snatching baby lubbers. If the UCG did the trick for you last year, it'd be great for us. I wonder if diluted coffee would work if I sprayed the lilies, etc, since people sit and eat outside in the garden. I don't want to apply the nice dark slurry all over the foliage, it might spoil some appetites! But they might not even notice just a sprayed-on application. The area is mulched with pebbles, so I think the grounds all over the white would look quite conspicuous. Susie

Dawn, Thanks for remembering that, because I had searched, and found the Nolo bait, and was wondering if it really worked. I'll bet our grasshoppers are close to 1/2" but I'm going to try it anyway, if it doesn't work, I'll order the other stuff. I have seen a lot more grasshoppers here than what we usually have, and was fearful for the tomatoes!! I'll bet the guineas would not work here in town. We got our first tomato today, it was a big boy and was pretty good. It actually did not rain here today, yea!!

There's thousands of different species of grasshopper and there's usually at least one for every type of plant. But it's just a matter of geography whether you have one there that likes coffee leaves, or is suited/can adapt to eating them. I had one at my place that none of the grasshoppers seemed to develop a taste for. Unfortunately mealy bugs absolutely loved it.
