Green caterpillar with yellow strips

Hi there

A short and stocky lime green caterpillar with yellow stripes has just decimated one of my native wattle trees. The creature is approx 1" long and almost 1/2" wide. There was a small pool of water at the base of the tree also and there were many of these floating in it and they stink like rotting meat (sorry, you probably don't need that much information). I'm really nervous it will move to the rest of our trees and we have approx 100 of them all approx 3ft high.

I need help to identify this pest and work out the best way to kill it. I have taken a photo of the bug and will email it to anyone who needs to see it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

regards

Pam
