transplanting xanthorrhoea

Hi guys! My brother in law is in the building industry and is currently managing a site in the southwest. There are a number of xanthorrhoea on a site that are going to be bulldozed. He has permission to dig them up and take them however we arent really sure of the best method of doing so. I have read that it is best to keep them in pots for a number of years befor trying to plant them in the garden and that you need to remove quite alot of soil from around the plant when you take it. Can anyone give us any tips....we really dont want to see these beautiful trees go to waste!!

Hi Cougar, yes take as much as possible soil, you may need a permit to take/move as over here (Qld)every one moved /sold / taken from the wild is to be numbered and permit no's receipts etc, even orchids are covered over here so please be careful. Good luck. Peter

pity the building industry can't plan to work around things like this hey? rip tear is all they seem to know. also think you might be well placed if you spoke to an expert on the matter, as i understand them they have a very long tap root and most large plants taken from the wild end up dead anyway. i was told by a native nursery person that to take them from the wild you need to take up to one meter out of the soil around each plant the reason these plants create their own micorzoria or whatever so they need to be replanted into their original soil to stand a chance.

i'm sure you'll find a local expert somewhere. the sounds of progress.

Hi FW - I had the same problem when I wanted to post a photo and actually had to go through the other GW forums to see how other people did it. I then subscribed to Photobucket, which allows you to upload photos to your account (free) which in turn gives you a code to paste into the GW forum message. You don't actually insert the photo to the message, just the code. Photobucket actually hosts your photo via the code. Once you've used it a couple of times it is quite easy. It is a pity there isn't a similar feature in GW - as you say.

Hey all, I have lots of saplings at various stages (5cm to 2m tall!)growing on a piece of land I am trying to keep clear. I can dig some out and deliver to Metro Melbourne. (Too big to post!). I'm guessing the smaller ones will transplant better. I have messmate, narrow-leaf peppermint, prickly tea-tree, correa, running postman, and even some Xanthorrhoea minor. Plus many others that I can't recall right now. Looking for: any fruit, nut, herb plants, or anything ethnobotanically interesting. Cheers! Mike

By the way, mine are seed grown and haven't yet put on stems below the leaves. Both have multiplied their heads and are not quite as attractive as when they had single stems - what they really need is a good fire through them. Alternatively cutting way back, but I reckon fire is better, it's more natural for them. Also, a purchased 'bush' collected specimen (anything up to $200 plus) by a licensed collector, can take up to 2 years to die: they can be transplanted but care needs to be taken to disturb the roots as little as possible. I currently have 3 grown from seed that I've had in for about 10 years. They took a few years to flower but once they did they developed multiple heads and while they still look ok, they aren't as attractive as when they had just a single head. Flower/seed spikes go up each year and are very bird attractive, when the spike falls or you cut it down, if you leave it on the ground to rot down seedlings spring up. The thing with grass trees is they like a fire through them every few years or if you can't provide that a good cut back will benefit - you may have noticed that after a bush-fire grass trees are the first plants to regenerate. I've managed to transplant them ok by restricting root disturbance as much as possible, however, they generally don't like being disturbed and can take up to 2 years to die as a result.
