Kabocha Japanese Squash(Buttercup squash)

Hi All,

I am on a mission trying to source seeds for this Buttercup Squash it is about 150cm round like a ball with a dark green skin and it is very sweet to eat.I came across this when visiting NZ it is grown there for export to Japan I think it may be a Hydrid plant but not sure about that any help on tracking seed source would be most welcome .

Hi John

The seed companies in Australia have seeds for a Jap pumpkin which I think is the one available in the supermarkets. You can import pumpkin and squash seed from overseas, as long as the botanical name is on the packet. See Rays thread on importing seeds. I would look at some of the US websites, as they have pictures of the vegetable and you can identify them.

Too late? This is my first year for growing these & mine are at about the same growth state as yours. I planted Sunshine & the literature states it takes 95 days. So that means mine should be ready in early November, which should be just perfect here in north Mississippi. You being in Ga leads me to think you too have timed this correctly. My goal is to harvest my pumpkins & different winter squash before Thanksgiving.

The old Burgess Buutercup is usually a fair performer, good vine with decent yield. Very susceptible to SVB tho. Lots of vendors just sell a generic buttercup now. Unless the grower has been careful and selective, The burgess can lose a lot of it qualities. The Japanese Kabocha s are in the same group, so you might want to try one of those. I'm about to order some open pollinated Kabocha. Check it out! I'll be growing these in a my three sisters and a foreigner(the Kabocha)garden. Blue Kuri Cucurbita maxima A traditional open pollinated Japanese kabocha squash that has globe-shaped fruit with blue-green skin. The flesh is thick, yellow and very sweet. I planted kabocha last year and lost most of them to SVB. This year, I protected the vines and I still do not see the SVB moth come by this time. The vines are growing very strong now. The largest fruit is about 3" diameter. I also have about 20 small vines, just with 3 sets of true leaves. I hope they can produce some before the frost time. Kabocha needs a long growing season, like 90 days or so. Kobocha is about the only pumpkin/squash I grow and eat. The orange pumpkins are for Halloween and I did not plant them this year.

Hi Guys
I have seed of Kabocha
I do not know if it is a Hybrid but it very well know by Japanese people and I suspect that it is open pollinated (I might be wrong)....It is grown in very large quantities down here for export to Japan
It is a very nice pumpkin to eat (quite dry and sweet) and quite smallish for a pumpkin (15-25cm round with rough dark green skin

Hey, Peter! It's wonderful to see you back. Was wondering where you had gone to!

Was thinking of you just yesterday when I sorted out my tomato seeds and trying to decide which tomatoes to grow this year.

I do not to this site very often now...other things happening but will publish my list (of seeds I have to trade or give away)...in a few weeks...over 130 vars of toms this year...about up 50% on last eyar...we ahd a shouse season last eyar with early frosts (75 frosts in 91 days) from apr 1 so no medium to late vars ripening plus lack of water...we have had less than 250mm since last october 1 and already (for the last two or three weeks) it feels like spring most days
I want to renew most of my olstock vars this year plus will grow a few requests people have sent me but there are a couple I am looking for....red handbad, stump of the world, scheimigg stoo, long keeper, anything Tasmanian....Ray's Tasmanian Yellow did very well (in comparison), and any watermelon that are very early and /or cold tolerant...should anyone have any
