HAVE: Cananga odorata (ylang ylang)

Hello to all you patient, future cananga growers. The seed is still on the trees. Looking like fat little avocadoes. It is getting darker but still not ripe. Hang in there, this is my first time with it. I'm off to Cairns Monday for knee surgery so hopefully it won't ripen and fall while I'm away.

Updates or ripe seed soon.

Brendon, the seeds arrived today in good condition and a generous quantity too. Thank you, thank you! (I hope you didn't need a ladder to get to them :-) )

I would never recommend Ylang Ylang to you for this purpose. Its an extremely messy tree. It sheds leaves a few times a season and is sort of a pest magnet for mealybug and scale when grown in any indoor growing area, needs pretty constant maintenance of some sort. Also needs pretty high humidity. Even though you may have a cathedral ceiling for height, you have to also consider the spread. My ceiling in the greenhouse is 20 feet. The tree hit that in less than 3 years and wanted to keep going. The spread was easily 10 feet diameter in a circular pattern. I finally chopped mine last January to a 3 ft stump to start over. Its already growing back.

Hi, Kemistry. I'm sorry I didn't see your post before this. About the fragrance-- I haven't been able to catch any fragrance from it. There have been several flowers that matured and opened up, tho they didn't turn yellow-- stayed green and then fell off. I've tried mornings and evenings, and quite often at midday. We've had many, many very hot, humid days. I just don't get anything. Unfortunately, I believe my nose is losing its ability to detect a number of scents, so I can never be sure when it is the plant and when it's my nose. Sorry I can't be of more help. If I ever am able to catch a whiff from it, I will definitely report back here. The artabotrys hexapetalus I had five or so years ago had a wonderful rich scent of bananas plus a lot of other notes in it that started to waft about 2 or 3 in the afternoon. It was the richest, warmest, loveliest scent I had ever smelled, and this is what I was hoping to recapture.

Gardenweb Australia prevents me from posing the name of the webstore I mail-ordered mine due to spam. If you google Cananga odorata v. fruticosa, I'm sure you'll find it. It doesn't appear to be available at this time, though you can put it on your wish list. Fruticosa looks similar to Odorata, and blooms easily even in the 1st year, but no where near the strong fragrance of the CO tree - not even close, but I'm hoping it's just because mine is not fully mature, yet (wishful thinking). Thank you...the seeds arrived yesterday. Approximately how long do they take to germinate?

Hello,
glad they arrived O.K. Pop them out of the berries and remove the pulp. Plant them in a well drained mix and keep them warm they should germinate very quickly. Mine have flowered from seed in two to three years.

It was a treat to receive the small fig-like fruits containing the seed. I'd bought a small quantity of commercial seed in the past (which had been removed from the pulp) and not a single one germinated. I discovered later that the seeds have to be planted fresh or they won't germinate. So receiving them in their little figs is fantastic!

The only thing I'd query is germination time, because I've heard that they usually take weeks to germinate--up to three months even. Probably depends on growing conditions as well as the freshness of the seed itself--freshness is not in doubt here!
