Hebe Dying back

We have a lovely mass planting of hebes. Last year we had one that just died. Now we have another plant showing die back signs - although it does have new growth.

The leaves get small dots all over their tops. Could this be related to a disease? We have not treated the plants with anything as yet.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi Peter,
This is known a leaf spotting. It is a fungal problem. Cut off what you can and spray with Mancozeb. Good luck, Dee.

Hi. I am new to the site and found it through a google search.

I have three large hebes in the garden which have done well for about ten years. I recently noticed that they all show signs of die back, one of them quite badly and i doubt whether they will survive. they were fine in the recent dry hot weather but seem to have deteriorated since the recent downpours although they are on three seperate sites which does not become waterlogged.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this problem. The leaves and stems simply turn black then the leaves fall to the ground. It seems strange that three seperate plants have been affected and I was wondering if there are any specific new diseases around.

Any comments would be appreciated

I'd suggest starting over with a new plant and plant it where it has a north exposure with just a bit of limited direct sun in early morning or late afternoon. As others have said, they don't really like heat or hot sun, and do best in the fog belts or sun which doesn't bake in summer. They thrive in areas with summer fog and drizzle. I'd suggest looking for plants you like that actually thrive with summer heat, Gardenias, as one example, you can grow them there, we generally fail with them near the coast. Your Kalanchoe beharensis is another plant that won't much like your winters as a plant in the ground. If that spot against the wall is also protected from getting drenched with winter rains, you might get it to grow; otherwise I'd suggest it as a movable container plant, and bring it indoors during the coldest/wettest weather.

The roots looked okay to me. I am going to put it in some potting soil today in the same pot. That is just the soil it was in, while it was in the ground. Is the Miracle Grow potting soil okay?

Haven't seen anyone indicate a time frame for the "typical" sizes being given for this cultivar. If it is for propagules merely, say, 5 years old then much taller specimens may be possible - without long periods of time being involved. And the planting site of the specific specimen being asked about sounds like a more favorable situation than usual in temperate climates, where performance (including fast growth and longevity) beyond what is generally seen farther north could occur. And 2 m is only twice 1 m. But you do have to wonder about 2 m in 7 years for a plant expected to be a low and broad "ground-cover". The only way for the discussion to move ahead is for confirming photos of the supposed example in Spain to be shown.

Both are striped, and they look the same to me Jay. I think that they might be sweet autumn clematis, Clematis terniflora, which in warmer areas where the seeds can mature will spread invasively by seed into wild areas. So not recommended. cross posted with you flowerful. Unfortunately often plant swap plants are ones that spread in uncontrolled fashion, either as garden thugs that overwhelm more desirable plants, or listed invasives that will spread into the wild.
