Hey Jennifer: I did use Sluggo once but you have to re apply it often. Seemed like a pain for the cost. We have three cats that are into positively anything so I have to use any chemicals if I can help it. So last year I went out and bought a whole bunch of plastic ashtrays from the dollar store. This is for my hosta beds. Once a week I fill up the ashtrays that are hidden behind the hostas with whatever the single cheapest beer is at the grocery. At that time I might rinse out the slug carcasses or I might not. It is just as effective to pour beer in with or without dead slugs (or what's left of them) in the ashtray. I do rinse them out as needed with the hose and then put them back in place. It works great. Furthermore I like the looks on my neighbors faces when I walk around the front yard at 6 a.m. Saturday morning carrying a six pack:) Kate

Now, instead of pouring left-over coffee down the sink, save it and pour it over the soil around plants that need protection. Slugs will avoid the area (according to Owen, whose source is the USDA, Hawaii). Or put down used coffee grounds for similar results. (Used coffee grounds can be had for free at many Starbucks. Markings do seem to confirm "Leopard Slug" even though the size is suggested to be 4-8 inches. However, my specimen is not extended and likely still in a dormant state due to ground temps, even though on the day I spotted it the air temp was in the 60's. Apparently not considered a serious invader in MI, MISIN - Midwest Invasive Species Network, doesn't list it. Although I guess if it showed up in your garden you might feel differently. iNaturalist actually shows a record in the same park, or very near the same park, where I spotted my specimen. floraluk2 Thanks for the help.

Not sure about what works better on slugs, but as per safety, I'd consider SDS as opposed to whether someone thinks they are organic. Iron Phosphate is completely benign, though eye irritation can occur. Sodium Ferric (EDTA) is a little less benign. Not carcinogenic, but can trigger allergic reactions, and may cause respiratory damage if ingested in large quantities.
