If they are tiny gnats. It's more likely that they are fungus gnats. Too much water in the soil causes the right conditions for these things to thrive, let the soil dry out. what really worked for me is yeast. i noticed that the fruit flies really liked to hang around bread. so i proofed some yeast (overly warm water, sugar, and yeast) amounts don't matter, but don't be too stingy on the sugar. i also found that when i put the mixture in a medium blue bowl vs white they were way more attracted. i also kept a spray bottle nearby, and would spray them into the mixture as they hung around the sides of the bowl. i must have got thousands over a month. change the water/yeast mixture when there are too many fruitflies. plus once the yeast has proofed, spray it down a bit or stir it so that the yeast isn't frothy on top. excuse the lower case - i have a broken arm. carol

Someone told me that here in Perth the department of agriculture has a responsibility to provide fruit bates for every fruit tree that you have as a means of controlling pests, I haven't been able to get through to anyone yet to find out if this is true ? Does anyone know?

I found a fruit fly in a package of chicken a couple of weeks ago. Dead, if course. I contacted the processing company, not to get a refund but just to let them know they need to double check their facilities. The lady I spoke with was appreciative and said she would let their maintenance dept know. I hope she did!
