I grew them once when I lived in SoCal... can't remember where I got the stock. The gophers really loved them, only a few plants survived. The yield from those plants was not impressive, and the tubers were small & very difficult to clean. I gave away what little I had, and never grew them again. Wish I could be more encouraging... it is an interesting plant, but there are other, more productive root crops that are a better use of space.

What is controversial about it? It's not something one could survive on--you'd spend all your time grubbing through the dirt to find the underground seeds. They're a bit smaller than an average pea and look like a big fat lentil with a dark brown skin. Boiled, they aren't bad tasting. The flavor most resembles a chick pea to me. I've never tried the above ground seeds; they are quite little. If you are interested, I could go out and look to see what I can find before they sprout in the Spring or wait until they begin to sprout and dig up some seedlings.
