In San Diego there is no reason you could not plant now. At the end of the season(if you can tell when that is in San Diego)I would cut the foliage off about four inches above the rhizome. There is no reason to dig them unless they eventually get too crowded or you want to move them. You should not need to stake Cannas, but they do like water and rich soil. Al

Also I have liatris I am clearing out, and some red oriental poppy, all should do OK there I think. We still have snow though so it may be a couple of more weeks before I know what I am digging (and the ground is soft enough to dig)

Hey everybody. I stumbled across this thread and wondered if you all are still interested in trading canna seeds? If so, I would love to trade for anything. I have Mr. President (or that's what I've been told they're called-- red flowers with red leaves); I also have green-leafed ones with yellow, orange, pink, red, and yellow with orange splotches. They all get pretty tall, in the 6-15 foot range. The Mr. Presidents get taller than the others. Let me know! bob
