Clianthus seeds

Hi to you all.

I know this isn't an exchange forum so hope this post won't hurt. In fact I'm looking for some seed of Clianthus puniceus (as the subject says), a plant I already tried to grow several ys ago but eventually succumbed to some #@*#! elusive leaf eater. Likely slugs, I've been told.

Now I'm planning to give it a try in a 600 mt asl location.

Where a sign clearly explains to the slugs it's a strictly forbidden chomping area.

Please help me.

I, too, found that the snails adored it. I had another here which was doing well, but when I last looked all I saw was a dry twig:-(((((

There is a nz seed company that sells this species to aus. I have just sown some bought from a nz mitre 10 and only have 1 little seedling coming up. I'm going to try from these people to see if i get better germination.

Hi Joy, I'm not sure how I stumbled across this thread... I agree with Karyn that Armenian cucumbers are worth growing. They produce very heavily in our area. I planted some in the narrow side yard on a small trellis. They didn't even get full sun back there. I got far more than we could eat, and they were better than most cucumbers. They got a ton of water and fertilizer, as they were getting the overflow from giant pumpkins I grew that year. If I have any seed left they would probably be over 5 years old at this point. Randy

Hakea and corymbia germinate quite easily. Put the seeds in a very sandy mix and keep moist. I find just putting the pots with seeds out in a sunny spot and watering daily is quite successful, but the fresher the seed is the more success youll have. C ficifolia does not necessarily give you a red flowering tree though when its grown from seed. over here in aust they sell them grafted to make sure you get a red flowering tree but from seed they can be white or red or lots of shades in between. Unfortunately the clianthus are very temperamental, even for aussies to grow and they can be quite short lived. I cant really give you any advice, except give them a try in a well draining soil, plant them out and dont treat them kindly. they grow in very arid areas so even moderate kindness seems to throw them off.

According to all the references, it's 'easy from seed' planted in spring. I suspect it's like sweet peas or Sophora - needing a soak overnight, or planting in autumn so it gets the cycles of wet/dry, cool/cold. On the surface, barely covered with leaf litter and humus. (At least, that's the conditions for a bazillion Sophora to emerge each year!)

It prefers open situations and average soil, even somewhat shingly. No slug need bother crossing the hot rocks to come by. As it is found on cliffs 600m asl will be very homelike. Light frosts, down to -5C will be fine once it's settled in.

Grow on and plant out from pots because they don't appreciate root disturbance.

If you know someone who is already growing it, ask for semi-firm cuttings to start under protection. And, if you want to keep it - ensure you start a new crop every three years or so because they get woody/leggy pretty quickly, even when tip pruned each year.
