Colourful natives for wedding bouquet

Hello all,

I'm interested in all opinions regarding Aussie natives for my wedding bouquet. I'd like some colour, as well as variety in textures. I'm normally an orchid forum gardenweb girl, so I'm planning on having some aust native dendrobiums in there, but want to make the whole bouquet aussie! the more colours/variety, the better! please don't hold back, send me your ideas and I'll look up every single one of them eagerly, and with many thanks!

I absolutely LOVE the idea of having a native bouquet! oh, and suggestions for the groomsmen and bridesmaids would be greatly appreciated too!

Also, can I get just ANY usual florist to organise this for me?

Might I offer a hearty congratulations on your upcomming wedding!

I have some suggestions on species, but am not at familiar with florists in NSW, unfortunately. Perhapse contact your local ASGAP people on this link:

Species (all should be available with a Google Image Search):

Keep in mind the availability of these depend very much on the time of year you're getting hitched

(sp. = various species, lots of different colours in most cases).

Banksia coccinea (stunning dep red/scarlet colour, smaller inflorescence compared to most Banskia sp.)
Goodia sp.
Kennedia sp.
Darwinia sp.
Arthropodium strictum (Chocolate Lily)
Hakea sp.
Indigofera australis
Callistemon (of course!)
Grevillea (of course!)
Eucalyptus caesia
Eucalyptus macrocarpa (pretty hard to come by, very limited season, but brilliant flower)
Corymbia ficifolia (they finished flowering about a month ago, so won't be available until the start of next year)
Acacia sp. (hundreds, something should be in flower no matter what time of year)
Tetratheca sp.
Correa sp.
Xerochrysum sp. (paper daisies)
Eremophilla sp.
Anigozanthos sp. (kangaroo paws)
Scaevola aemula
Dampiera sp.
Doryanthes excelsa (Gymea Lily, huge flower, but would make a great centre piece for the boquet or table)
Macropidia (more kangaroo paws)
Haemodorum (kanga paws, again)
Telopea sp.

There was a posting on this forum on the same topic some months ago. Maybe it would be of help for you to go back and find it?
As Jim says, it does make a big difference what time of the year the big event is to happen.
Jim's given you a great list there. Maybe anything you don't want for the wedding day could be put into your plans for the garden of the family home!

As Arthur said, the problem is going to be availability. There are a few large flowered natives eg Phaius tankervilleae, Phalaenopsis rosenstromii, Dendrobium capitisyork and its hybrids and several Caladenia but you'd be hard pressed getting a florist to find them. As you're in NSW, have you considered Dendrobium speciosum (if it's a spring wedding?) The flowers are only around 1 1/2" but the spikes are sufficiently crammed with flowers to give any other native flower a run for its money. You'd probably need to get in touch with some larger native growers or native orchid nurseries in your area to source them but you may be able to come to an agreement between the florist and the grower. However, it may be very difficult assuring good quality flowers at the right time. If you're looking for native orchid growers or nurseries ask at the nearest ANOS group. Go to the links page of their website: http://www.anos.org.au Personally, as weddings are a string of problems waiting to eventuate, I'd be inclined to forego the native orchids or bend the rules and use readily available exotics to save yourself an additional stress. Eegerman, You might want to google a site called florabuy. They are a flower wholesaler and when I was married 4 years ago I ordered all of my flowers from them (I just tried to check the site and it says 'temporarily unavailable' - hmm? I haven't checked it in 4 years...). At the time they had a minimum purchase of $100 and they did sell to individuals (I called them to ask this before I tried to place an order as the site makes it seem as if they only sell to businesses). Like you, I wanted to carry peonies for my mid-July wedding and I was able to get **many** beautiful stems of Sarah Bernhardt peonies (as well as roses, lilies, etc, etc...)through them. I would think that all of those are what we call florist varieties. A large percentage of these grow well inside greenhouses, but not outdoors. You might want to check with the florist they came from, as far as variety names, then check on HelpMeFind.com to see if they are available as commercial plants. If not, we can suggest garden varieties with the same coloring. In the meantime I would definitely dry and save some of the rose petals as a memento. Sandwiching separated petals between two paper towels and microwaving them on high for a minute or two works for me, and retains color better than air drying.
