Humulus lupulus 'aurea' and lespedeza

Does anyone have any success growing the golden hop? Great latin name don't you think? Mine was doing well in the pot but then I planted it it the ground and it refused to grow, had small sickly yellow leaves and now is gfetting nibbled....by ??slugs? snails?? other creepey crawlies??

Also does anyone have lespedeza bicolour anywhere in Australia?

Haven't tried the golden hop but I do grow the 'ordinary' one.

I started mine in a pot, then moved on to a bucket. It was The Most Miserable Plant.

So, wot the 'eck - in the middle of a drought I put it into stony,clay soil and watered it sometimes. On the eastern side of the house.

It muttered for about a year, then took off. Each year I haul out the adventurers from under the verandah, gather the hops, and chop it back for winter.

After all that rambling, in my experience, they're not much in pots. They prefer to be planted and in a spot that is not sunbaked. South or east side and watered over summer to keep the spider mites at bay. They don't mind the rinsing water from the washing machine if you're on tight rations. Reasonable soil, preferably not sandy unless it has plenty of humus for the Humulus. (Forgive...) If they get good air movement they don't seem to be troubled with mould.

Humulus lupulus 'Aureus'is definitely not a pot plant. A plant that grows easily up to 6meter in one season cannot be a plant that is happy in a pot.
Mine is 5 years old, planted against an east wall of a stable, and now it covers a large part of the north and south side as well. It dies down completely in winter and grows back again from early spring. It flowers abundantly in august and I find seedlings everywhere.
Be sure you have enough space for this plant. I gave one to a friend who said she had, but she already had to take it out after two years because it overgrew everything.
It is a beautifull plant with its bright yellow leaves and hop flowers. If you have the space: plant it.

Actually, I often do like the "hard to find" plants. I have great soil, regular rainfall, and a green thumb, so I can grow most anything for my zone, unless it's a desert type plant. I have garden clubs come every year, and despite gardens of overflowing phlox, iris, salvias, etc. they are always drawn to the unusual, something they haven't seen before. "Hard to find" often means "slow to grow, and doesn't like dividing", not necessarily difficult.

I have found both trumpetvine and porcelain berry (Amelopsis), too vigorous for planting on a deck fence but am very pleased with Lonicera 'John Clayton, L. magnifica and 'Alabama Crimson'. I do not like the color of the normal L. periclymenum 'Serotina' and have not had success with L. 'Mandarin' but they may work. My L. periclymenum 'G.S.Thomas', being yellow, sounds great, but it is a tiny plant still. Eventually, I think I will have to prune out dead material or otherwise spend time on almost any vine that comes to mind. Consider that my successes have been in zone 7. I am also having success with Clematis 'Polish Spirit' and C. montana 'Grandiflora' but the latter blooms on old wood and so may not succeed in your zone. I have one plant of the autumn blooming white Clematis that I have been trying to destroy as long as I have lived here and still I found a single sprout last week.
