propagating Lily seed

Any tips? I have tried almost everything, I think without success. But I have just potted on some new plants from scales :-)))), no labels this time, of course:-(. But I still hve some seed . Does it need to be fresh or what?

I use a white polystyrene box, fill it with a good quality seed raising mix. A 2cm layer of well rotted cow manure at the bottom is a good idea for the roots to grow down into. Scatter the seeds liberally over the top of the mix, and cover with a thin layer of vermiculite. Water enough to moisten the mixture. Put in a shady place and wait.
I have a box ful germinating at present. They are one of the species liliums - I forget which.
I haven't tried Asiatics, but I am sure a lot of the 'seed' that you collect does not contain an embryo. If you look closely at the seed the really pale stuff is just chaff. The good seeds have a darker, slightly swollen centre.
I have had success with fritillarias, agapanthus, dierama and galtonia using the above method.

It's not my own seed, Jan, but bought seed which is so annoying. I have not tried that although I do have boxes with lots of other bulb seeds. Maybe I need to try getting my own seed this year. I went out and checked the scales and I had 8 or nine ready to pot up on!! So I did into a Cammellis mix. I did not get any bulbils last year either but will check again. The lilies are coming into flower now.

When the leaves die down in autumn, tip out your pots (not at the same time unless you bought the same colour twice...). There will be these lumpish which-side-is-up bulby-looking things, browny-cream. And there will be little ones. Pot these up separately from the bigger ones. Each lump has several growing points on the top, like the eyes on a potato, and the roots come from the top, too. Good drainage and good compost-y planting medium. Wind shelter and around six hours of sun. Depending on your zone or micro-climate, you can leave them in the ground over winter. Some hybrids can be slow to multiply. If not much has happened underground this season, replant anyway. If they set seed you can plant them out quite thickly, then pot on the little tubers for the following season. Hybrids generally won't come true from seed but you could get some interesting results.

I'm not a lily expert but I'd suspect an insect before a fungal or viral infection in the absence of a photo. Botrytis is certainly possible though - but so is a lily beetle. Is your foliage impacted? That would tell you more than the flower. If you have browning or malformed foliage then I'd suspect a viral infection. If so, you must take care to keep your beds clean and don't let the foliage fall on the ground. Also, move some things to improve air circulation around the base of the plant. I use Bulbtone on all my bulbs and tubers and have not found that the high acidity of my soil has any impact at all. Agree on the Black Beauty - mine is almost 7 ft tall this year and at last count had around 30+ flowers per stem but it hasn't stopped growing yet. I grow Casa Blanca, Stargazer, Black Beauty and the species lilies L. speciosum rubra and alba all in the same bed. I find the orientals always follow the asiatics and trumpet lilies, and the species lilies ( of which Black Beauty is more closely related) always bring up the end of the lily season. In fact my orientals will be opening in the next few days and the species lilies are weeks away still. I had what looked like a botrytis like infection in one Black Beauty and the top of the plant was like blasted and the leaves were coming out malformed - dug it up and it looked perfectly healthy and gigantic but I tossed it anyway. You can propagate with bulb scaling or they don't really cost that much if you think they are diseased.

Are these lilies fragrant? Why I am asking is that I was visiting a motel and they had a beautiful arrangement of lilies, lisianthus and other flowers, I am not sure what type of lily they were but there was the most beautiful perfume so I am always interested in choosing flowers of this category. Jan

I know the Orientals are very fragrant and have been around for ever, so much so that many people get headaches. I love the perfume, but even so suffer if I have to sit near them for too long-as I did sometimes in church with a bunch behind me. I think the Asiatics are just as fragrant. Christmas lilies seem to thrive here so could be the way to go. A lot of my lily bulbs seem to have just disappeared.

I am not sure which is which but have had both flowering this year. The smaller flower of the 2 types is definately far less fragrant. It usually has about 10 flower buds per stem. My 1st 2 have opened today, the bigger sort have fewer flowers.
