Does anyone know how far the runners can go with phyllostachys edulis (moso) bamboo? How much room do they need?

Do read up on it first, it is very invasive will run into the next door property, but you can put a barrier down.

A 60cms deep concrete barrier but mind you if your soil is good the runners will go under that, and if it is hard clay like, the runners will go over the top of it, so its a no win situation. I know they travel more than 15ft or 5mts but how much further I dont know, and that is only one root x that by how many roots and that would be the end of a normal size back yard nothing else could grow

I would not grow any running bamboo, clumping is best I have them, about 6ft or 2 mts from my back fence it is only 10ft or 3mts high at present but should fly away this wet season, so have a big think about it before you buy any.

Mine have never spread their roots more than 20 cm underground, but that might be because they are grown in a very heavy pot, which I check frequently for cracks. If they start looking a bit too healthy I stop watering them for a while, that keeps them under control. Failing that, use roundup to hold them back a bit.

When using fertilizers always determine what, if any specific nutrients are deficient and apply products that will address that particular deficiency. In my region nitrogen is normally all that could use some boosting - in those instances were fertilization is called for. Granular fertilizers need to be put on in time for them to wash into the soil and be taken up by feeder roots. Spring and fall are the best times to fertilize most hardy plants. However, since bamboo is a grass the same fertilization program used for lawns should suit it also. You would not, of course put a fertilizer + broadleaf weed herbicide combo around bamboo unless, I suppose there were a number of broad-leaf weeds growing around it you wanted to kill. Assuming the broad-leaf herbicide would not bother the bamboo. But people really shouldn't be using granular herbicide on lawns either.

Hello. I live in Anderson county in a town called piedmont. I have 5 anderson clones growing near a creek behind me. I put them in the ground in 2005. I didnt see any growth in 2006 but this year my biggest one i transplanted is putting up 4 shoots and they are all around the 3 inch range in diameter. Two of the other ones are also putting up shoots.

MOSO Seed Germination!

Bad news!!! The container I had them in fell off the window ledge and all the dirt/seedlings flopped onto my carpet and computer monitor last night. I fixed up a tub of new potting soil and transplanted them into it as fast as possible, but I know they're not supposed to be moved while they're young. This morning, I checked to see how they were doing. Out of the 3 seedlings, one of them has its single leaf drying up. It's not brown, but it's leaf is accumulating crinkles! I need help guys :(! What should I do?
