Yep, lots do. This next one is Eucalyptus macrocarpa. but notice how it's stamens pop out straight whereas the first ones stay tucked up and 'wet', kind of like a butterfly when it first emerges I guess!!

Aside from coppicing, there are two additional means of reducing the size of this tree: First-and this applies to any broadleaved species-heading back cuts-always to a lateral-to each and every branch in the crown, a very old technique known as drop-crotch pruning. There, now that everybody is done laughing at the funny name, that's a real thing. Via this method, one could arguably hold any such tree to a given size almost indefinitely. Do I think this a good course of action? No, of course not! The other method is via growth regulators, either sprayed, soil-drenched, or injected into the tree. The chemical paclobutryzol is one such growth regulator. This is not something you pick up at the hardware store-strictly restricted use. I don't expect that method to be employed here either! +oM

I think their actual hardiness is closer to 10a but I could be wrong. I've seen the pair at the Huntington in LA. Agree that it is one of the world's most amazing tree species in terms of bark. That being said Arbutus menziesii is right up there, too. Pity they are dying out, even in parts of their native range. And of course they are completely impossible to grow on the east coast, along with 'Marina'. There's an Arbutus X andrachnoides at Woodlanders in SC, and I'm hoping mine survives this winter. Didn't protect it and it has about 25% leaf burn now, but it's small and I generally find its performance encouraging. Certainly, this was not a winter that zn 8 plants were going to survive w/o almost complete top kill. My pineapple guavas now appear completely dead, although after the first freeze to 3F they only had about 40% leaf burn. What's really emerging this year is that the duration, repeatedness and depth of the freezes are almost as bad as the absolute temperature reached, at least for many warm temperature/subtropical plants.

My soil is broken down sandstone with clay elements. The location of this palm is fortunate to be near where the rabbit hutch used to be (R.I.P. Bun-Bun). The rabbit had a positive effect on the soil. Otherwise, there is regular irrigation -- brief but regular -- and I fertilize during warm weather months with whatever is available, but at least once or twice with a palm-specific fertilizer to be sure it gets the micro-nutrients. This palm is on the north side of the fence, not much direct sun, but bright light. My lowest recorded winter temperatures are 31F, and that's extreme, burnt the leaf tips a bit, but no serious damage. This winter I had one night as low as 36F, much more normal winter with lows hovering above 40F most of the time. I am 1/2 mile from the ocean, get lots of fog, feels somewhat like New Caledonia where the palm originates. A hot summer day here is 85F after the morning fog burns off, but with humidity, heat is not a problem for this palm. I should think Louisiana would be a great home for this palm, providing you don't suffer hard winter freezes. I like these palms so much I planted three more elsewhere in the garden. Well, one is a hookeri, hoping for an even redder emergent leaf. Best of luck with your chambeys!
