WANTED: Hop plants and growing instructions

Can anyone suggest where I might be able to buy, beg, borrow or steal specific types of Hop plant (Cascade, Saaz, Hallertau, Fuggles etc.)? Besides the use of the flowers in home-brewing, they make a wonderfully showy and fragrant display. There's been a lack of information at any of the nurseries I've visited or phoned.

Thanks Peter,

Would you send some cuttings this winter if I pay postage? (I assume there are no quarantine requirements from Tas.)

My husband grows hops for beer brewing. He has four plants - each different type. Had them for 3 years now. Local brewing supply store had a small book - everything you need to know about growing hops. They are very easy to grow. What I can tell you: They need trelis and will grow as far as you let them - 10 ft or higher. Make sure they are not standing in wet ground; if you buy a root plant - make sure crown of the plant is above ground The plants send out multiple shoots from the ground - but we only keep one or two -- again, since we are looking for large flowers, and not a full covered fence Since we grow them for brewing - we cut them to the ground at the end of summer after we collected the flowers They love nitrogen, manure. We fertilize them after harvesting/pruning, and then early in the season before the growth starts Japanese Beatles love to destroy them. Another one - saddleback caterpillar - you are not supposed to touch them, I was told on this website.

easy? holy crap. any easier it would be a weed. seriously though, neighbor had some growing in his yard, we both hate the chain link fence that seperates us, so we took 2 cuttings and stuck them in the ground. our fence is like maybe 50 ft long, and the 2 plants sprawl pretty much all the way across. every summer bees love it, my dog loves it, i dont brew anymore, but i give probably 2lbs of fresh hops to a buddy every year. in fact here, i usually get two harvests. we dont fertilize it(dog does), it gets FULL Virginia BEach sun all day, theres maybe 18inches of soil(wide, between my drive way and his) theyre growing in, weeds, grass, the occasional hit of the weedeater, whatever, it keeps on spreading. and all we do is rip the dead stuff off at the end of the year and cut to the ground. hard part, i have never seen hops sold locally, maybe on the net? as far as brewing, you have to figure out what you want to brew and what kind of hops that requires. theres a ton of varieties i think.

I tried some from Sacred Seeds in Toronto. The vine grew, but no hops(:o(, so they must have been the hybrid you describe. I found some growing on a gazebo in a local park, but the seedpods had all opened and dispersed. I'm going to try to "harvest" some from there a little earlier in the fall next year. Keep an eagle eye out for some local plants, or perhaps a farmer's co-op seed source, or a brew-your-own beer place might be helpful.

A lot of hops are grown in western WA, even more in eastern WA. Ditto Oregon's Willamette Valley. In fact the PNW is the largest commercial hop growing area in the country. Pretty much any kind will grow well here and there are numerous varieties that have been developed in this area - Willamette, Glacier, Mt. Hood, Cascade, etc. Hop vines get big and grow fast (upto a foot a day in season), so you need a lot of room and a sturdy, tall trellising system in full sun. Generally the flowers are harvested in late summer or early fall. The vine is herbaceous - that is, it dies back to the ground each winter - so clean up is easy. Just wait until after frost kills back the topgrowth and whack it off at ground level. I grew the ornamental golden hops (flowers can be used for brewing but not considered as flavorful as other types) for years and finally removed it as the roots migrated extensively to areas where it was not wanted and its long, vining and prickly tendrils kept grabbing at my dogs as they wandered by and tangling in their fur. Had to effect rescues several times :-)

You can buy them at the following website but at $35 each seems pretty expensive!

Here is a link that might be useful: Grumpy's Home Brew shop

Thanks for that. Yes, might restrict myself to one general purpose aroma hop for that price. The 'Ringwoods' could be used for bittering.

I've been looking for ages too - so thanks for the link.
Unfortunately they don't seem to have Saaz (the one I was after).

The Grand Ridge brewery in Mirboo North, Vic, has a few hop vines growing up the front of it. You could easily take a few discreet cuttings. I don't know what strain it is though. Also, CERES in Brunswick has what I believe are hop vines growing on one of the fences, but they may be gone now.

Cheers!
