A smaller form of willow, Prairie Cascade has golden-yellow stems and glossy leaves and is more disease and insect resistant. Its smaller size (35-45') makes it a good choice for those of us who want a weeping willow, but have smaller yards with less space. One of the best landscape willows. Can be limbed up real easy to form a straight trunk. Average growth rate of 3-5 ft. per year. I like this selection better than the "zippy" Australian clones because the foliage is darker and much more dense. Hardiness -40 °F." http://www.backyardgardener.com/plantname/pda_edfd.html "his is a weeping deciduous tree, 35'-45' tall and wide, with yellowish-brown shoots. Leaves are elliptic, very shiny, medium green above, up to 5" long. 'Prairie Cascade' is a hybrid of S. pentandra x S.'Blanda', and does not bear catkins. A beautiful specimen by water, but don't plant this tree anywhere near a septic system or its lines or you and the Roto-Rooter man will know each other on a first name basis." http://www.mnpower.com/treebook/fact102.html "Weeping growth habit with fine textured branches. Bright yellow color of young stems. Description: Height: 50-70' Width: 30-50' Hardiness Zone: 3b Weeping Willows are large round to wide-spreading trees with slender, pendulous branches. New shoots are yellow to yellow-green in color. Leaves are very narrow and 2-4" long. Foliage emerges very early in the spring and remains on the tree late into the fall. They grow very rapidly. Because of their size and pendulous habit, they are best used only on large properties. Willows hybridize readily and their precise identification can be quite confusing. Requirements and Culture: Not demanding of site conditions. Prefer ample moisture and are often found along waterways. Branches break readily so pruning and clean up is frequently required. Limitations: Tree size and form and brittle branches limit usefulness on small properties. Species and Selected Cultivars: S. alba `Tristis' - is the common Golden Weeping Willow. It is a large tree. Sometimes sold as `Niobe'. `Prairie Cascade' - was developed at the Experiment Station in Morden, Manitoba Canada. It is a hybrid combining the form of the Weeping Willow with the glossy foliage of the Laurel Willow." http://www.umanitoba.ca/afs/plant_science/courses/PLNT0790/woodyplantsnotes/woody_plantsr_s.html "Salix hybrid 'Prairie Cascade' (Prairie Cascade Willow) Native Habitat / Origin. 'Prairie Cascade' is a hybrid resulting from a cross between Salix alba var. tristis (for the weeping habit) and Salix pentandra (for cold hardiness). Developed and introduced by Wilbert Ronald at the Agriculture Canada Research Centre, Morden, Manitoba in 1981. Hardiness zone. Zone 3a. Shade tolerance. Relatively intolerant. Habit and size. Medium tree, 12 to 15 m tall and wide, round, with cascading, pendulous branches, less so in winter. It grows as a multi-stemmed plant. Fast growth rate. Medium-fine texture in winter; medium to medium-fine texture in summer. Leaves. Leaves are shiny, dark green, alternate, simple, elliptic-lanceolate to ovate, acuminate tips, rounded base, serrulate margins. Flowers. Female clone. Flowers occur in catkins, borne on short, leafy, axillary shoots. Not very showy. Fruits are small capsules that split into two halves when mature to reveal hairy seeds. Culture. 'Prairie Cascade' has grown well at the University of Manitoba through difficult winters and with no supplementary irrigation. Landscape value. Valued for its yellow twigs and cascading form, given that weeping willows are not generally hardy enough for the prairies. It is useful for large properties, parks, and golf courses. Willows have extensive root systems and are not usually recommended for residential properties. May suffer winter die-back." Prairie Cascade is a hybrid resulting from a cross between Salix alba var. tristis and Salix pentandra. Mine is not weeping yet but shooting straight up up and far away high up there.

Andrew, PS. Sonia does have great plants as I have bought from her several times. Since I have known John for a long time I generally buy directly from him, but sometimes Sonia finds a rare one so I just get it from her as she takes good care of her plumies. Gina is one of my fav's I have 3 of them. The first one I bought from John was when he brought them in from Thailand and paid about 150.00 for a 3 tipper in a 6" pot. Also I never keep multiples of the same variety so I really love Gina..lol The other thing is depending on the heat and temps you have during supper Jenny, and Jackie may not take on its look with the coloring or curling of the petals Here is a pic of Jackie blooming last season in my cooler coastal area, pic was taken in late Aug: Pics of other Jungle Jacks plumeis you got from my cooler patch: Elsie without heat in mid June Christina cooler temp first blooming Blooming in Sept when temps where in the upper 80s Gina Taken in warmer temp in Sept Jenny without heat in late June in my costal area Jenny in heat Penang Peach in late June when its cooler Smith Candy Apple is a good one for cooler areas and good growth habit. Pic from cooler June Samirie with heat Samirie needs some heat to pop, with out heat Lava Flow in cooler temps in June So basically some plumies require heat and bright bright sun to look like the pics sometimes. If you live in an area that has cooler summers or near the coast you need to be more selective. Here are a few other plumies that do not perform well in cooler areas. Purple Jack (looks pink, unless you have heat) University Hawaii Orange Emmersons Pink Nova (the white eye will not appear or pop without sun and heat) Flames of the sun Bonnie Fox Dane Madam Poni Wild Fire only stays red never gets deep Ruby Gold Heart of Gold Thai Peach, etc.

FYI: There's a WIP (work in progress) by Tex Norwood and others notable plumerians to catalog photos and descriptions - see plumeriaid.com. He's also put together a community-driven plumeria portal (also WIP) at plumeriasales.com, which includes sales, trades, events, docs, etc. Much of this is being driven by several Facebook groups (both public and hidden). As always, Laura, thanks for the kind words, and hope to see you out here again some day. In the interest of being a good end user, it's useful to define requirements before designing the solution (ha- too many years in high tech). What do I want to accomplish? 1 - from the description and photos, decide if I interested 2 - prevent duplicates due to AKAs or 'very similar' 3 - decide if it is suitable to my growing conditions 4 - make recommendations 5 - ID unknowns (with usual caveats) 6 - understand risks (e.g. BT, bud drop, vitality) Flower description - PSA has certainly defined the language and process, as have the Oz folks. However, this applies to the 'One True Bloom'. There's certainly more that can be added, but it does provide an excellent vetted baseline for what the flower should look like. ID an unknown - providing a best-guess of a named variety requires much more info: back of bloom, leaf, bark color, etc. That's where we need much more baseline info. Add to that the zillions of unnamed plants. However, if you purchase from a reputable dealer / hobbyist, there's a good chance it was a named variety, and can be ID'd. To root or not to root: which varieties should / must be grafted, and which ones make good graft hosts. Nice to know info: 'parentage' so when getting seeds I know which produced winners; 'source' for tracking down a rare plant or to give credit for some awesome new ones. I think it would be very cool to be able to bring up photos of known seedlings. Permutations - This is a biggie: whether regional, heat/cold related, humidity, it's easy to see that blooms can look completely different due to growing conditions. Capture that info, it's very useful. This is my personal axe to grind, and why each of my plants gets 3 bloom cycles to prove itself. If my notes say 'needs heat', I don't even get the plant. The list Laura refers to is a tracking file: # tips, if it bloomed, # inflos, BT, source, and so on. At the end of every year, I ruthlessly ponder, thin the herd and send selected plants to a new (usually warmer) home. BTW, if anyone wants a copy of my notes, just drop me a pm. irun5k et al: I'm chatting with a few non-GWers to gauge both the level of interest, feasibility and willingness to contribute (important!). Love your comments. ivysmon: thanks for unleasing this discussion, and to answer your original question, here's my notes, and note the contradictions due to growing conditions... You asked for guesses, and that's exactly what this is, Connie, a WILD guess! Could it possibly be a variegated dogwood? I thought of this only because it's pretty commonly found at local garden centers, and from when I was occasionally involved with nursery sales, a lot of people seemed to be attracted to it. I don't remember exactly, but I'm thinking the leaves might be bigger than you're describing, but check out the pic and google it for more pics to see if there's any resemblance. There are different varieties with somewhat varying variegations, so if it looks close, but no cigar, it could be a different variety. Also, if you live near a "real" garden center, you might consider taking a small piece of branch in to get it identified. When you figure out what it is, let us know!
