cynister, don't give up all of your sweet potato plants just because they're annuals. Sharing is a great idea, these are tough little guys and root pretty easily. But you can also dig up some and bring it inside, and grow it as a houseplant over the winter. I bought a gangly Blackie on sale last fall, cut it up to share with friends and kept some, and it's still doing okay... all right, my mom's is now doing better than mine but she has a greener thumb. Point is, they can make good houseplants. Mine even flowered inside once. :-) Spider mites tried to set up housekeeping but Blackie just shrugged them off with the occasional strong water shower in the sink. Likes the strongest sunlight you can give it. This is all presuming you have room indoors... I know some of us don't anymore. lol Best wishes. Terri

I tried the leaf of an ornamental potato once, but really I wouldn't eat them (and swallow) because they really do douse ornamentals with a load of chemicals you don't want in you (growth hormone, stop growth hormone etc). They are not bred for taste, and they are not tasty to me. I love the regular sweet potato leaves just fine enough - they aren't my favorite either but in hot weather in a hot climate they are green and edible and have superior nutrition when there is little other green stuff to eat.

24?! that's not a path, that's a country mile! every year, I buy ONE of the black-leaf varieties. one. in a 4" pot. plant it the very end of april in the protected corner of the back garden. the third week of may, it's usually put out enough growth that some of it's starting to root itself. I snip off these little bits, pot them up for a week, and plant them elsewhere. the second round of pruning gets given to friends for their hanging pots. a single rooted cutting can easily cover a 5x5' plot.
