passionfruit

I have a Nelly Kelly vine, two years old and healthy. I feed if with plenty of sheep manure, & once a month i feed it with sulphate of ammonia. The vine runs north south and is loaded with fruit. My problem is that thr fruit have a real thick skin. What am i doing wrong.All suggestions welcome.

nothing wrong - sometimes passionfruit develop thick skins - it may be genetic or environmental.

we feed ours once every 6-8 weeks with liver water 0 0 that's the water that you soak lambs fry in before peeling the meat. our passionfruit vine is over 20 metres long now and pretty much covers the full fence. We occassionally get thick skinned fruits, but the pulp still tastes the same.

I grew a Nelly Kelly when I lived in Melbourne and never did I feed it. I found that the only time the fruit got those thick skins was when it was about five years old. It was in a raised bed and so productive. Do you water it enough. As Paradisi said the fruit taste the same just harder to get into Have a look at the link below you may find your answer there even if it is from Qld..Cheers..MM.

Liam Coldwell (Zone 9a) are you say passionfruit vine will not grow any fruit if it's pruned ? I ask because I started growing yellow passion fruit from seeds and it is about 2 inches tall, I intend to keep in container because I don't have space and I leave in a very cold place which means I have to overwinter my vine inside. I have to prune it and it will not produce? It means I have to abandon my passionfruit vine?

Nope not available anymore. Passion fruit plants apparently only have a three to four year life span before root rot kills them and that's what happened! I was to forgetful to take cuttings for myself and have to buy another plant now. If anyone who wants a cutting emails me around august I should have a bunch when I prune the new one.

Passionfruit don't taste all that good anyway and are close to a wild fruit. I think in this case a seed-grown fruit will be likely to taste pretty much the same or very similar. You will often have more variation with fruits that were developed through hybridization or were bred by humans. Even in those cases you typically have about a 25% chance it will taste equally as good, a 50% chance it will be almost as good, and a 25% chance it will be worse. (And very rarely it might turn out to be better)

I had a huge passion vine when I lived in Venice (CA), and I would get 60 to 80 fruits a day during the summer, and so I bought a Juiceman juicer to extract the juice, which is extremely sour. I used the juice to make sorbet, and I added a simple sugar sweetener to the juice to make it sweet. To make the sorbet from this mixture, I put it in a shallow rectangular pan and put that in the freezer. Then, every so often, I would stir the mixture with a fork, to break up the ice crystals, and when it was sufficiently frozen, I put it in a blender, to smoothen the texture, and then I put it into containers to store in the freezer. Because I used fresh passion fruit, the sorbet had a wonderful and delicate fragrance, reminiscent of the flowers.
