Well, I'm glad this "tedhort" fellow might know, because most posters on this forum are yanks and the Australian flora is mostly greek to us. It's not the commonly-grown-elsewhere-in-the-world PIttosporum undulatum, but I could imagine it's another Australian Pittosporum. Or perhaps a Eugenia.

Must plead guilty to never taking any photos. Got frustrated a few years ago when driving around England doing the touristy thing and looking for orchids here and there and of course finding none. There are probably many orchids in other parts of the world described as a leafless saprophytes which cannot be cultivated

Certainly a Banksia - but what you actually seem to have is not a seed at all, but a dead flower-head, cut before the seeds have formed. I am sure a bit of searching on the internet would find you a picture of a seedhead, for comparison. Trish
