Marguerite daisies

I usually have a few (or sometimes a lot) marguerite daisies in my garden.

Over the past couple of years I've removed most of them because they were getting quite straggly and not performing very well.

Is it too late to plant some now? When would you advise trimming them and by how much? In the past whenever I've trimmed daisies they seem to either not grow back very well, not flower, or die.

Mine seem to get a bit feral, but I usually prune them when flowering slows down, quite hard - about half the bush. Perhaps you should trim them more often, sometimes I have found if I cut an old bush back too hard (into very old wood) they do die, but they are also very easy to grow from cuttings. So while you are trimming, put a few of the prunings in a pot!

Thanks greenwoods - I'm not a great pruner, but when my daisies get all those dead leaves hanging off the lower branches, I do hack them off (probably too far). This has most likely been where I've gone wrong.

I had this plant several years ago. It did great until we got our hot weather. Mine had only morning sun, but by mid July it was fizzled out. I remember reading posts from other gardeners here and if they had hot summers, the plant just didn't do well. I've seen them in pots when we go on vacation way up north in Wis. They seemed to do well up there. The temps didn't get near as high or stay that way as long as in the southern part of the state. I would plant it in your front bed. is there a reason ... why it cant go in the ground??? here are your variables: they are full sun plants... window light might not work ... you will spend about $100 on lights and electricity ... terra cotta pots are a nightmare indoors... very hard to deal with.. add $5 to 10 more dollars for a new pot ... potting media is very important indoors.. add 10 to 20 more dollars ... in snow country.. forced air furnaces dont create or allow enough humidity for OUTDOOR plants .... so add another 10 or 15 $$$ for a tray .. some gravel.. to create humidity .. plus other variable .. i think you get the point... when it all boils down.. you are going to spend one to two hundred dollars.. for a plant you can buy next spring. for $3 ... now.. all that said.. GO FOR IT ... i always want to enable some newbie in gardening ... but dont be surprised or POd if you fail ... no one ever learned something new.. w/o trying ... i suggest you visit the container forum for info on growing plants in pots ... especially in regard to terra cotta indoors ... with a furnace ... the pot itself can wick water out of the media ... and though cactus can enjoy such.. on a heavy water plant.. it can be a problem .... balancing it all out ... and then the houseplant forum.. for any wisdom they might offer as to dealing with perennials as houseplants ... and GOOD LUCK!!!! ken ps: presuming apartment.. i would find a friend with a yard.. plant it in the garden in late sept or so ... and go get it back in april ... repot it.. and love it up .... that would be called 'healing it in' for winter .....

Hi I have a dear friend from Germany who really wants the Marguerite daisy of her homeland. I would like to obtain a few cuttings or small plants of argyranthemum preferably. I have found in the past that my daisy bushes have limited life, and that cutting back too hard will shorten this life considerably. I now prune my daisies immediately after flowering with hedge trimmers. A light "haircut" that just removes the dead flowers keeps the plants a good rounded shape and the leaves always look healthy. If you regard them as replaceable and take cuttings regularly (they grow so easily from cuttings), you will have new plants to replace those which die.
