wisteria

I have old wisteria vines & recently established ones (abt 5 mths). Question 1) when is the right time to prune the old & how much? 2) Shld the new vines be pruned back & by how much?

The leaves are all turning gold on the old vines & the new vines lost theirs wks ago. I live in Perth & wld welcome any advice.

I can't really give you advice personally, because the only wisteria I've grown is a seedling which is currently only about 8cms. high.
I did come across this ABC article with Peter Valder who is something of a wisteria expert. I hope it helps.

I think whether or not you prune, depends on whether you want to contain it - as in the arch shown in Peter Valder's article.

I have a very old, very large wisteria which I prune back to roughly the sides of the shed that it grows over - but AFTER flowering. (I used to have an elderly neighbour who got her mowing man in every winter to prune everything back to within an inch of its life - and then complained that her lilacs hadn't flowered for years!!) A couple of light snips here and there over summer keeps the long soft shoots out of the way.

My wisteria is at its best around the October long weekend - masses of flowers. And the perfume!!

We live just southeast of Phoenix, and have already wasted a lot of money on star jasmine plants for our trellis. The first pair of plants initially thrived and blossomed...until they were overrun with spider mites. We tried many different techniques to rid the plants of the mites but to no avail. We ordered two more star jasmine plants, this time younger plants, and purchased new large pots for them. However, we decided to hold off on re-potting them until they had a chance to grow a bit. We never got the chance to re-pot them, because, once again, a spider mite infestation killed them. We have other plants that remain untouched by spider mites. We have a beautiful wrought iron trellis that's standing empty right now, and we'd like a fragrant vine for it. We love wisteria, but it looks like it's not an option for us, since we don't want to waste money on more high-risk plants. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Good for you Bev, This gardening stuff can be very easy, sometimes.....I'll try some of my "doubles" rose of sharon bushes your way! I've just receintly read of someone on another forum, (haven't a clue which one as I "lurk" everywhere) who just plunks the cuttings in the ground and hers' take. She started doing this when a storm caused many fallen branches. After reducing their size and stripping all but a couple leaves she stuck them back into her garden and they rooted. Now she uses this as her main propigation method. Easy peasy!!! I'll put a couple in the ground too. See how both methods work. Please let us know when the neighbourhood plant exchanges are, see you in the spring. Great gardening, Justine

Is this wisteria?

This is the native Wisteria frutescens. The flowers are a lot smaller than the non native Wisteria species, and it blooms later than the non native Wisteria species. It also doesn't climb as agressively as the others, and can be a bush form.

Prune after flowering and take about a third off. If its a japanese wisteria prune after the main flush in spring as it will spot flower through til autumn. (mine does)
