Just what is it with me? So many of my plants turn up their toes. I think I must be doing something wrong. When you are planting a shrub out of the nursery container into the ground some experts say not to mess with the roots while others say that you should 'tickle' out the roots. Has anyone got an opinion on which is correct and when?

hello, I do this if the roots are coiled around inside the pot otherwise I dont disturb the roots.when you plant a new plant, water it in and keep it well watered at first until it settles in.

I give all mine a good soak in a bucket of water, before planting them. If the ground is really dry, I fill the planting hole with water, and let it soak in, then I put a bit more water on after back filling with soil.
I often slice the side of the root bundle in about 4 places if the roots are very tight.

Out of curiosity, what kind of plants are you working with? Anything rare or just good old hardy greens? I’ve been adding to my own indoor mix lately and honestly got tired of running around local nurseries. If you have enough slippage some time the plants will just go with it. Maybe you need to plant using jute erosion netting or even something like Hold A Hill blocks.

Some native plants do that if you touch the roots, so it's a case of drop in, fill and water. Otherwise I do much the same as the other two.

Thank you all for the advice. I'll try to be kinder to my plants. I started to 'tickle' the roots of plants after I took dead plants out and they came out like plugs out of a bath. I guess they weren't wet enough.
