This North Carolina site sponsored by the NC Botanical Garden, the UNC Herbarium, and the UNC School of Library and Information Science is great. It includes a virtual herbarium as well as other resources. Shelley Here is a link that might be useful: Plant Information Center

Carol, you are right, I was thinking that the linearifolia meant that it only has single line-like leafs. Given a little more time to grow the ternite and perhaps even biternate (I had to looks those up) condition of the foliage would be much more apparent. Looking closer at my photo I see that the smaller leaves could easily be attached to the larger leaves. I will have to go back and see if I can can get a series of shots at different stages. Would leaflets be the proper term or is that reserved for compound leaves? That link you provided helped, especially with the first photo of a newly emerged plant. These just pop out of the ground a-bloomin! Terrestrial man, I am going to have to save that southern idaho site as a favorite. I like that vascular plants of Utah site as well and use it often. I just wish they had photos on that site rather than providing links. Another great site that I came across while researching Dicentra uniflora is the UVSC virtual herbarium. Here is a link that shows a couple specimens of Orogenia linearifolia. Orogenia linearifolia Brian

I had to bring this thread back up. I started my three seeds last year (2008) in late winter. Two seeds of the three germinated but were very slow to grow for me. In fact the seedlings stayed so small all season that I never planted them out. I kept them in 4 inch pots through the summer, fall and winter until this spring when I finally decided to give them a shot in ground. I planted them out in early June. One on the east side of the house and a week or two later one on the south side of the house. The first one that was planted out on the east side of the house has several buds about to burst open. Both plants are under 2ft. tall and about a ft. across and both are planted in well amended soil and because of all the rain we are getting right now they are probably getting a bit more water than they would normally get. It is also cooler this year than normal I am just thrilled that I didn't give up on my latent seedlings regardless of what name they are eventually given. Robin, SL411 ia much easier to remember than some of the plants I have growing in my garden. Penny

I've got two forms of dichlamys from Robin, and the scarlet one bloomed well for me. The red one hasn't bloomed yet. I get the feeling it is not as hardy as microphylla, to which it is related. It has bracts that remind me of the cardinalis form of fulgens, and would not be surprised if it is closely related to that one also. It looks to me to be somewhat of a ground cover, and likes sun, but with access to water. It was very thirsty during the hot dry summer of 2007 and responded well to repotting and fertilization. It bloomed well last year. You are in a good location to test it.
