Are you using bottom heat after planting the seed? Many tropical plants will not germinate at room temperatures of 70-75 degrees, but require some heat (90 degrees plus). Scarifying the seed with a nail clipper is a technique I have used with seeds with such a hard outer coating, and it does work. I personal would not put them into boiling water (warm water soak before planting...overnight...is different). Also, one week is not sufficiently long to determine whether your seeds are still viable. If the seed process does not work for you, Delonix is also readily available from bare-rooted starter plants, and they are very quick growing! Yes to your first question. These trees are semi- to fully deciduous even in more tropical climates (during the dry season--our winter). They have been introduced into South Florida where they seem to grow beautifully. If you following the instructions on the fertilizer you're using, you shouldn't be afraid of harming the tree. Not sure of the specific nutritional needs of this plant, but given its rapid rate of growth, I'm sure it would appreciate an occasional fertilizing. If you can, put the plants outside for the summer. Also, your pots look to be large enough but they seem half full. If you add more soil make sure you add it to the bottom (don't pile it on the top or the trunks will rot). Hope this was helpful.

Hi same is true here in s. florida.. I think they actually tend to vary from year to year . Not sure if there are named cultivars but there is another specie D. elata which has white flowers as well as a white form of Delonix regia. There's also a whole bunch of dwarf type poincianna which come in many different colors. I suspect they might hybridize?? gary
