On the left i have already lulled out 2 pups of it and placed it on same mixture of soil as stated above, i havent watered it but mist sprayed it, how do i care for those 2 pups

Rina: The best laid plans of mice and men etc.. So I was taking my plant out of the plastic container (it was dry, dry, dry), my cat scooted by my feet and the plant flew up in the air, landed on the floor and broke the top off just about where your red line is. The cat was more then interested in the roly poly leaves on the ground and began to bat them around. By the time I was able to recover, I managed to salvage the bottom part of the plant below where the top broke off pretty much intact. Buster Brown, the cat culprit, had done quite a bit of damage to what remained of the top and so I pitched it. As it stands now, I repotted the Pachy in some gritty type potting mix and we will see what happens next.....BTW, I like the way you grow your plants. Mine do fairly well outside, it's over the winter under the grow lights with their funky watering schedule that many of my succulents have met a swift end.......Thank you again for your input and your pictures in particular. I need all the help I can get on succulents..............Maryl

Kim Just few things to add: Best time to prune plants is during their growing season/period. That would be few months later. I have good experience with jades, and pruned them any time of year, without any problems. That may not work so well with some other plants (will not, usually, kill them but may set them back), but jades are very adaptable. All plants grow better during their active period. Should you decide to wait, your plant will grow some. If you can increase light now, new growth should be more compact = sets of leaves growing closer together. If that is the case, when you eventually prune, do not leave long etiolated parts on cuttings. It may mean that you would cut some branches couple of times: 1st when you prune it off the main branch, and 2nd time to shorten it. Actually, any piece of it will likely root if you want, including extra leaves (as long as they are healthy). Just be aware that you could end up with too many jades ! :) Embothrium mentioned: ..."if it were mine I would try moving it into stronger light without whacking it back, seeing what happens"... That is ok, but there is no question as what happens: etiolated growth will not revert to compact, and your plant is plenty etiolated. That's why I suggest to shorten up cuttings if you wait. OTH, some ppl may like long, bare (or sparsely leaved) branches, with compact, almost pom-pom top - so decide what you like. I have few plants that have, probably, trunks that are too long. Another suggestion I have is to cut close to a "ring" on the stem. I usually leave just couple of mm beyond. If you leave long stub beyond the 'ring', it will take long time before it dries up.

If it is coarse sand, it will work. I would check it for size by sifting it, using a kitchen sieve and use coarse parts that do not fall thru. So if coarse - keep it. t is difficult to judge size of it from the photo. Many ppl do not like perlite because t is so light, and they find that it 'floats'. I use it a lot - pumice would be great but it isn't easy to get for me. I do not really have problem with perlite, because I use grit top-dressing (that keeps perlite in the pot). I really like very gritty mix and use it for all succulents. It is approx. equal amounts of sifted or rinsed perlite and grit (I use chicken grit size #2). To that, I add small amount of turface, usually about 10-20%. Turface holds some water, but is also grainy. Sometimes, I substitute turface with soil or cocopeat, and it seems to work. No more than 20% of total (same as if using turface). I find gritty mix very well draining. Here is photo of it: Many ppl use mix of C&S soil and perlite (or pumice) in 1:1 ratio, and seem to like it. It could be better to use in hotter and drier regions than I am in. It would retain some water bit longer. I keep plants outside spring to fall, and do not worry about them getting rained on - because mix drains fast. If no rain for a while, I just water with garden hose. So there are few options for good mix. Since my plants have to be indoors for winter, I use lots of supplemental lights. You can buy 'fancy' grow lights...I use some CFL light bulbs, some LED light bulbs and also have LED tubes (if I have to get a new or additional, I get LED: they are more efficient). Make sure you get good light source; high k and lumens is what you are looking for... Threads I linked to show beheading many different succulent.
