I put all my collected seeds on wet paper in the dark to germinate and planted as they did so. They were all on one tray and got mixed up-washed and unwashed and colours. I see today that they are sprouting. I got loads of seeds from them. Luckily Red Dot have cheap planter pots :-)))))

Hi Annabel,
How do you collect the seed? My Dad used to grow cyclamen from seed fairly successfully but unfortunately he died a few years ago so I can't ask him his propogating secrets. How often do you get seed capsules on your plants? It doesn't seem to happen all that often on mine. I would like to know how to go about it. Any information would be truly appreciated.

I grew them originally from bought mixed seed two years ago, so there were quite a few seedlings. I had about 5 corms in a basket outside and it was 3 of these, plus a white bought plant that produced seed capsules. They are my first successes with Cyclamen, anything really, so feeling pleased. I had to try to keep the pods inside the containers and remove when ripe, big and fat and you could see brown seeds when carefully peeled back a bit. Then I left them till about Feb. No idea what I have as the seeds got mixed up on the tray. They need darkness to germinate, so just covered them on wet paper with a bit of handy black weed mat and gladwrap and put the other seed trays on top till they germinated checking that nothing dried out. This has also worked, slowly, for some Dierama and some native Iris seeds.

Just want to post a follow up to the posts above about my cyclamen plant not blooming. As a reminder, i got this plant nearly 7 years ago and it has reliably bloomed each fall through the winter every year with nothing more than watering and sunlight during bloom time, and then putting it aside in a darker place with less watering during the dormant summer when most of the leaves die off-- all the while in the same pot. My concern was that after moving to Arizona this summer, when I started watering more frequently in the fall, it produced leaves but no blooms through the fall/winter. I followed the advice to water with dilute fertilizer and be patient, as the plant looked healthy. It continued to be healthy and grow new leaves all winter, but no blooms. But just this week, blooms at last! Not the full big flowers it normally produces, but blooms nonetheless. Thank you for all your comments and advice!

I also buy only cyclamens with a heavy scent, usually pink. Out of 20 plants in the local greenhouse, I find the one with the best scent. A friend who is a florist says they have bred the scent out of florist flowers because people are allergic to the smells. I guess she would know this fact.

Its usual spot seems completely lacking in light which is a problem. They like bright indirect light without a lot of direct sun along with cool temperatures. Based on my experience with these, I think that it might have gotten a bit too dry at some point. They don't like to be soggy, but also don't like to dry out, so when the pot starts feeling a bit light, I put it in a dish and let it soak up water for a while, and then let it drain.

Is acetamiprid effective against cyclamen mites?

Would not be my first choice. It is a neonicotinoid and they have little to no effect on mites. In fact, the use of neonics has a deleterious effect on natural mite predators and has been considered the reason behind recent mite population booms. Stick with whatever miticide is available to you. Or you can try insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Also, both the cyclamen and broad mites are temperature sensitive. It is suggested that you immerse the entire pot into 110F water for 30 minutes to kill off the mites and with no damage to the plants.
