I think once the pods turn brown, the seeds are ripened. The seeds are supposed to be pale (white/light yellow) that's how you know it's fresh seed. Even the seed in commercial packets are white. I'm hoping the frost won't get my vine before the rest of the pods ripen, because they do take a very long time in doing so. I hope this helps! Monica

2-3 weeks! (non intentional) And I cooked then on top of my plant lights! I had the best germination when I did this, although it was only about 60%. I had them in little baggies with just a small amount of water, hoping to see the sprouts. After forgetting about them I noticed the seed coat would entirely remove and peel away to the inner seed leaves. Though they were lost, but I planted them shallow in soil, under light and got germination in about 5 days.

Hi jessew, Assuming you mean Ipomoea alba, I would just take a wait and see attitude and see if any of the pods advance to a stage like the pods in the pics at the link below. If they do, you could then try planting a few or test for viability before the time when you actually want to plant them, or maybe trade them.
