herbacious hibiscus and related malvaceae

I am finding the thirst of some of these plants quite taxing. I'm growing most in pots and they really need a saucer of water under all the time to cope with heat and winds. I dare not plant out as I'm sure my raised beds would be death to them. Still, with plants some 4 and 5 ft tall, much as I love the flowers, they take some space.
Any other experience in Qld or am I just pushing my luck? I thought of a bog garden but then they really don't want constant sodden conditions.
