Bigbeef - what a Tomato!

Bigbeef is a hybrid tomato that is round, large, has a smooth
thin skin and a great flavour. I was still picking fruit in early May this year. The current crop is again progressing well with early fruit. Strangely, in Melbourne where I live the seedlings are not available, so have propagated them from seed. They have also been developed with disease free characteristics. Can fully recommend this magnificent tomato. I do not believe it is too late to plant now.

Yes, Dee it is a very versatile tomato. We were overwhelmed by the size of our crop last season, not only the numbers, but also the size of the actual tomatoes - one weighed nearly 3/4 lb (350g). Great for sandwiches, salads and just about any recipe. Allan

I would like to offer this recipe. I have been using it for the past several years and it is delicious. This is the recipe from Ellie Topf's Small Batch Preserving, that Dave mentions. My first batch this year I accidentally doubled the Vinegar, and it is still delicious! CHUNKY BASIL PASTA SAUCE 8 cups coarsely chopped peeled tomatoes -- (about 9-12 tomatoes or 4 lb) 1 cup chopped onion 3 cloves garlic, minced 2/3 cup red wine 1/3 cup red wine vinegar 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 1 teaspoon pickling salt 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar 1 6-oz can tomato paste Combine tomatoes, onion, garlic, wine, vinegar, basil, parsley, salt, sugar and tomato paste in a very large non-reactive pan. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 40 minutes or until mixture reaches desired consistency, stirring frequently. Remove hot jars from canner and ladle sauce into jars to within 1/2 inch of rim Process 35 minutes for pint jars and 40 minutes for quart jars in a BWB. Makes 8 cups. Steve

Absolutely Brandywine. These and Cherokee Purple were the first to ripen here.. over three mos ago.. but I started with plants in four inch pots. The first ones I started got frozen in the late spring frost. The Brandywine were and still are the best of all.. the leaves are wider than any other tomato I know. The plants are very tall, about six foot.. I plant them all in tall baskets made of concrete reinforcement wire about five feet high and three feet in diameter. They fill them nicely.. the wire has large square mesh that is easy to reach into to pick the tomatoes. I used lots of alfalfa hay as mulch this year and had the best crop ever.. About planting from seed, it really helps to plant indoors in a very sunny windowsill in April to get a good start with these plants. Lots of light and warmth to get a good plant going in its own pot. I just have seven plants this year and they are producing lots of great tomatoes. Next year I hope to put in around a dozen or more so I can give more away. Also.. if you can find the seeds for Early Giant, it it a good big early tomato. But if you don't want to mess with planting seeds, buy the plants in late May and plant them outside, tend them well and you'll have tomatoes by Mid August.

Must be the variety. You never know about those farmers market vendors. They may have used seeds that were cross pollinated from last years crop. Very often those don't turn out to be amazing. But we bought a plant from the garden center. Big Boy. Mislabeled. Turned out to be a cherry with skin so tough it will choke you! I have to scald them and peel them so we can use them. Like peeling grapes. Sigh. So, your Market Vendor may have just got a bad packet of seeds. Just walked out and looked at my abundant supply of volunteers. Don't know what I've got. They came from the compost and are whatever the varieties of grocery store tomatoes inherited in their genes. Some look like San Marzanos, one like a beefsteak, most like your regular plum. Some are sunburned. The dreaded white spot at the top that will never turn red. But I just cut that part off, and we do have an umbrella out there to provide shade now that it's so hot. Lots of green tomatoes! Might try frying those.

Welcome to the forum. I just had a look at your website. I must say you have an absolutely beautiful house and garden. The house is very much like one I used to visit in Blackburn. Yours is so charming. I am sorry to read of the loss of your cat. I enjoyed reading the story and got quite a shock at the end to find she had passed away. I am sure in your care she was a happy little Vegemite!..Cheers, Dee.

Welcome Allan, you have some beautiful photos on your site, really enjoyed looking at them and reading your stories. Beautiful cat, so lucky to have had caring owners, you'll miss her, I bet. I must keep an eye open for those tomatoes, they sound good.

Well, as one who hasn't grown tomatoes for many years, I was rather chuffed to get a little seed from America in 2005. I did not have great success due to various pests and disease, but enough to tempt me to try again. The varieties I tried were also great, nothing like the tasteless supermarket things. So congratulations for growing, and promoting, great tomatoes, and please, keep saving those seeds!

Great Home page there Allan, very cute Dogs loved them all, Green with envy over your climbing roses they are Fantastic and your flowering Yucca's.................Hubby pulled out and disposed of all of our tomatoes today they were a sorry mess and full of fruit fly, something you dont have to worry about down there.
