Flotation method Hippeastrum seeds.

Have managed to get lots of hippi seeds to sprout following the flotation method.

The instructions say to pot up once the sprouted bits are 1cm long.

However. Is the sprouted bit a leaf or a root? Do I put the sprouted bit facing up or facing down.

I know this sounds stupid but given I have a 50% chance of being wrong I would dearly love to know.

Also can we stratify daylily seeds and plant out at any time of year here in Brisbane?

The sprouted bit will be the root, and no its not a silly question. Leaves will come along in time. I have grown many a hippy bulb following this method and I've always had a great success.

I'm interested in participating, but won't have seed for a while (most of mine are just now budding up). Also have some other bulbs on the way, so I can't say exactly what I'll have for seeding just yet. At the moment all I have setting seed is a White Dazzler x self, and I plan on using the seeds for experimentation with germination methods (unless someone wants some seeds from it). The cross I'd love to do the most but don't have the varieties would be a yellow variety crossed with RC's Grandeur. I adored Grandeur the moment I saw it :) And while I have a Grandeur on order, I have yet to acquire a yellow Hippy. Happy growing, Liltika

I'd say look for sprouts in 7-10 days, maybe less. It could take longer, but fresh seedlings sprout pretty quickly. Don't let the soil dry out. Seedlings like to be kept moist. K

I always make plans to try my hand at pollinating but never quite get around to it. So far nature has been kind, though, so I often just leave things outside. Sometimes I think I must have a particular insect pollinator specific to late fall, because for the last two years I've had seed on Griffinia as well. Only with the last few outdoor blooms of the fall though. At first I thought it was cross pollination between Griffinia species, but this year I got seeds when only one species was in bloom. The reticulatum striatifolium seed are unlike other amaryllids I've seen, so hopefully someone can help me out. It was very pretty when the capsule opened, orange on the inside with black seeds, and the color combination reminded me of a Korean sweetheart tree (Euscaphis).

I would like to thank everyone for their advice on growing these seeds. This morning I counted over 70 littles leaves in my greenhouse so things are working well. I actually tried 3 ways of propagating them, I did the flotation and out of the 100 odd seeds in there only about 8 never got roots. I also planted some in seedling trays and put them in a zip lock bag. success rate here is alot lower but i still have a time to see if they grow. The least successful method was simply putting them in a seedling tray in a shaded area. only a few have propagated. I chose a few different methods as I am currently studying horticulture and really needed to see what would work best. Knowing that the flotation method gave the seeds the best start i can't wait to get more seeds (am going agapanthus hunting soon). might have to check the neighbours and see if i can find any pods lying around. i have another 100 odd papillio butterfly seeds floating at the moment so am looking forward to getting them growing.

You float them in a container filled with water till they sprout roots
then you plant into a potting medium...MM.

Yes Mel is right. Just make little holes in the potting mix and slip the roots in and firm up gently and water. Plant about with the original seed at ground level. I think it helps to put in larger or deeper containers coz you don't have to move them on so quickly

hi cheery mel, I have about 20 baby hippies growing from the seed you sent a while ago, thanks for that, now I just need to figure out where to put them :)

I just bought some seeds. They are still in the sheaths. What does the seed look like? I so want to try to grow some of these but am not sure of what the seeds look like. thanks

The seeds are black, flat and about 1cm dia.
