Fritillaria meleagris

This year our clump of F. meleagris flowered better than ever and we are now left with several big fat seed heads. Has anyone grown it from seed before? I hear it is quite a long process, several years before you have plants which will flower and take care of themselves in the garden? Despite this I would like to give it a go, they are a beautiful bulb, one of my favoutite things in the garden.

Yes - it grows easily from seed. Spread it on top of the potting mix, and cover lightly with vermiculite and keep it just damp. Put the pot or container in the shade and sit back and wait. Late autumn is the best time to plant it. Make sure you use sterile potting mix, because the tiny seeldings look like grass. You will get heaps, as I did. The take about 3 or 4 years to bloom. I got my first bloom this year. They are pretty hassle free, so worth the wait.

Thankyou sparaxis, good practical advice, I'll get them started after the summer as you suggested. Can't wait to have lots of little frities :)

Hi! Well, it's good to hear that someone so far away is pleased to hear from someone this far away:D. I got the Fritillaria as a gift, in nature it isn't growing yet... But we have quite high temps latelly... It's been 22 degrees Celsius yesterday. Do you think it's very wrong that I've cut the foliage down and replanted the bulbs? This palnt is protected in Slovenia and it's hard to get it so I really dont want to lose it... Thanks for all the help! Cheers David

I am curious. Do you let them self sow or sow the seeds specifically and if so when and how? I collected a lot of F. meleagris seeds but don't know what to do with them. Thanks.

I found them easy from seed sown when it was shed. Just put into a pot and into a frame (largely to keep off the slugs here). Try and keep them growing as long as possible, it's fine if you keep them green by keeping them moist when the adult plants have already died down. Shrubs n bulbs I don't know why you had a problem with them, possibly because it was old seed? The Fritillaria group of the UK Alpine garden Society do their seed distribution in October. There seems to be a growing concensus that sowing later is not so good and you are better off storing the seeds in a fridge until the next season.
