Aussie grown garlic in Perth?

Does anyone know where Australian grown garlic is available in Perth?

My MIL is a bit upset that all she can find is imported and she was asking me to try growing some - which is great - but a more instant fix would be better!

I can buy it at my local farmer jacks. I will ask them today if they can tell me where they get it from, then you might be able to find other places that stock it.

Thankyou Freckle. I've passed that info on. There's a Farmer Jacks near enough for her to make it quite easy. Problem solved!

Oh my! That's actually a great, GREAT idea, hoovb! A dog kennel. You could put up snake fencing around the perimeter too, to keep out the rats. Good grief, a fortress for a veggie garden, but that's what it takes here. And with this huge 80 acre abandoned orange orchard right next to me, it is just teeming with roof (citrus) rats, ground squirrels and bunnies. Which is why we have SO many predators out here. Was scoping out a coyote just outside my fence chomping down on something, completely oblivious to my two Aussies pitching a gigantic fit. My big Aussie has already taken down one coyote, but they are so smart, they know that fence will keep the dogs away from them (until I open our back gate, of course). Patty S.

Zabby, The whole cloves (Spice World) peeled garlic that I buy in 3 lb containers aren't packed in anything. The minced garlic (I don't buy anymore) is packed in olive oil. Garlic remains the only thing that I have been unable to ferment by itself. Really convinced me just how good its anti-bacterial qualities are. Salsa...... Subbing chopped parsley leaves for the cilanto really helped for me. Yesterday batch #1 4 cups tomatoes 4 cups peaches 1 1/2 cups sweet onion 1 1/2 cups green bell pepper 1 Biker Billy jalapeÃ±o 2 Bhut Jolokia peppers (very hot) 7 garlic cloves 2 tsp cumin seeds 2 tsp fresh ground black pepper 1/8 cup canning salt 1/8 cup parsley 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup lemon juice 15 oz can tomato sauce 12 oz can tomato paste BWB for 15 min = 6 pints Batch #2 8 cups tomatoes 4 cups peaches 2 1/4 cups green bell pepper 2 tbs manzano pepper powder (hot) 10 garlic cloves 3 1/4 cups sweet onions 1 tbs cumin seeds 1 tbs fresh ground black pepper 3/16 cup canning salt 3 tbs parsley 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1 cup lemon juice 15 oz can tomato sauce 12 oz can tomato paste BWB for 15 min = 7 pints and aprox 2 for the fridge to be frozen today. I forgot the tomatillos and will just chop them into the 2 or so pints that I'm going to freeze. Or I might pressure process them. The peach skin didn't seem to hurt a thing. The peaches were a bit hard, but I liked the flavor and they sure diced nicely in my new onion dicer. Tomatoes are the only thing that I have to dice by hand and they took forever as I am so stinking slow at things like that. Thanks again, Annie!! jt

BHP/Billiton?? Sorry Rob I had no intention of upsetting you. I still stand by what I said in my previous post. But I thought it was clear that I was referring to fruit and vegetables not iron, steel or anything else BHP Billiton may be dealing with. To quote you; "We are talking about spuds and cabbages, not Holdens and Iron ore." To quote me; "If we wish to go back to being all protectionist about buying foreign food then why shouldn't we expect have it applied to our exports as well." Note I referred to foreign FOOD not iron or steel. I also referred "African grown food". I agree that the thread of this debate should stick to food. If you read my previous post again, food is exactly the subject I was referring to. I have lived and worked in New Zealand over the years, in the wine industry and the folk on the land there battle to find markets just as hard as our growers do. They depend MUCH more on their Agricultural and Horticultural industry than we do here. It is pretty well all they have got. (Lucky in a way, all that beautiful soil and rainfall). I feel for the Tasmanian farmers and it is probably true that MacDonalds are being callous about them. But I still feel we need to step back a bit and walk in the shoes of both the Tasmanians and the Kiwis. It is my feeling that we should not apply one law for ourselves and a contradictory law for others. We now get fresh food flown all the way to Sydney from Darwin and the Ord River which is much farther away than New Zealand. New Zealand gets penalised because it is a foreign country.

I work at a supermarket and the imported Chinese garlic does eventually sprout. The only issue I could see that it *may* spread some exotic allium virus to the soil meaning kiss goodbye growing the onion family for the next decade in that plot of soil. That said, I've planted some garlic I noticed sprouting from the health food shop (both regular and Russian "elephant" garlic) and it's looking very, very healthy indeed. The main reason why Australian garlic isn't commonly available is twofold; price and quality. The Chinese grow a very attractive garlic bulb, which the Australians can't replicate. Unfortunately, while the Australian garlic may taste just as good (if not better), most people only purchase fruit and vegies based on appearance (for example the local Gatton onions are not selling now because they are yellow instead of brown, despite tasting better!). Add to this the fact that harvesting garlic is labour intensive, then China wins hands-down in both stakes.

Not sure where you are in Perth, but I've been buying locally grown garlic from the Swansea Markets in East Vic Park for a while now. They haven't had it in for a couple of weeks lately though, apparently there's a shortage at the moment.

I bought a pile of certified organic, locally grown garlic last week at the Freo markets. It wasn't very cheap, but they also had local non organic garlic which was much cheaper. I think most of their stuff is grown in the chittering valley..

I grow my own supply now, but sourced my original garlic from one of the Freo markets organic stalls. I can't remember where they were grown but certainly in WA. They were not cheap.

I started with a dozen or so bulbs and for two years I didn't eat any home-grown garlic, but saved it all for replanting. Any bought garlic that happened to sprout also got planted. Not everything survived but the ones that liked the conditions did. Last year's harvest (after taking out enough for planting) lasted about 6 months, but I am expecting my first fully home grown garlic supply from this summer's harvest - about 50 bulbs to plant and about 120 to last the year.

jeez, are you guys getting garlic already? 1!!!!We're just putting it in here. BRRRRRRR!!, cold in the north. Everything just stops, and waits. Jealous as all get out.
