Most of these Hippeastrums have been and gone though still plenty of the smaller flowered apricot ones left.

My Favourite the Big White

A Big Red

This one has a big flower also.

And this is a little Jumping Spider I found on the leaf they are so tiny only 1cm in size, they ooze personility and are my favourite spider

Hi Amaryll, Yes, I just like to get as much info as possible before doing the expt. so to speak....comes with the training I suppose. I also realize that if someone from zone 9 is giving me advice on how to grow one of my plants I should take it with a container of salt!! I find Hippeastrum to be one of the worlds easiest plants to grow, but I've not bothered to deal with seed before and I know that Hans-Werner has been working with seed for a long time and so I always appreciate his and anyone elses advice. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope they just muddle through the winter and then I'll put them outside next summer of course. It is amazing how much larger and thinner the aulicum and calytratum seedlings are than the striatum and psittacinum. It's sort of fun so far. Unfortuantely all of my grow lights have more important plants under them so these will have to deal with southern exposure window light. Thanks again :o) Dan

Detergents will not help. And I tried diluted garlic juice too but that would not help either. Dimethoate is an agent which is absorbed into the flesh of them bulbs and working from there and is an effective means for curing and I observed that it was reliable for many y and still appears to work, AND: It IS being used for edible crop like cherries to protect these against maggots of certain flies. There are many according preparations on th ummmh... market and these contain 400 grams/L dissolution in Cyclohexane. Use the highest documented concentration, thi 2 mL in 1 L of water and spray thoroughly into the heart, onto the (precleaned) surface of the bulbs and ont the ubstrate surface, and repeat this treatment, using a freshly prepared solution again, after two weeks in order to get access to the progeny which has freshly hatched also. I have some difficulties with marketing as reason against. I would prefer to purchase a properly cured plant rather than having spread mites from a sick, unaccordingly treated plant into my collection :-((( ABER HALLO!

Dan, In all reality you're probably right, there are some differences that aren't totally noticeable unless you grow the two side by side and I think they could just be clonal differences. I don't want to doubt the botanists and others that have been working on the genera but I have my doubts as well, the point is the plant will probably end up being Hippeastrum puniceum var ferreyrae but to me this plant is just as important as when it was labeled H. ferreyrae considering the location and the fact it is different from other H. puniceum. H. puniceum var. alba for example is very rare and incredible, sadly it's hard to find in cultivation but I'm sure you guessed that it is a white form of H. puniceum. As for the Peru trip, they had many, MANY problems and my friend had to end up staying several extra weeks. It was very hectic on them and the other trip was rescheduled for a future time. Josh

The three specimen as shown with the basket look quite different to me. The one sibling in the last picture shows very superior color profile and intensity AND superior shape AND three flowers on a scape, in short it looks precious to me, and the fact that HoustonPat gave it away indicates that he is suffering from the common problem that fortunate Hippeastrum breeders will inevitable have to face sooner or later namely "I am drowning in the crop" xD

Lovely. Here they are known as Amaryllis. I have been buying them since they were first introduced here, about 35 years ago from a newspaper add. Have to grow them indoors of course.
I just planted 3 new ones for Christmas. This is the time when the new bulbs are sold.
I love your little spider friend too.

Thanks for that Inga yes they are known as Amaryllis in some countries, three new ones for Christmas what a lovely idea.
I have no idea when the bulbs are sold here as I have never bought any, lots I have grown from seeds that friends have given me
That large white one I bought already flowering in a pot at a Sunday market and my Neighbour gave me the red one and the last pink one.

Great pictures Misty, I only have the "big red" that I split up into two pots and they look o.k., but no flowers yet The Spider is a beauty and looks more friendly than fearsome.

Thanks Chas they are beautiful flowers and they multiply so fast in this sub-tropical weather so I have a few.

Glad you like it cestrum Thanks we have lots of different jumping spiders in our garden.
Because they are so small they are hard to see and most times they are underneath the leaves.
