I don't know the name of the fern but it is growing madly in the forest area around Barumba Dam some up to 4ft but mostly 2'6"-3ft TERRIBLE NOT WORKING IN METRIC YET

hi goldhills, I have that bulb plant too and tonyfromoz id'ed it recently on one of the other forums as drimiopsis

I think the fern is Pteris tremula, a rather weedy native that often comes up in moist crevices. I guess its spores are everywhere in the air. Your plant is about the size it gets. Its main drawback is the dead fronds it accumulates. I have never seen it get very prolific in any one spot.

And yes, the other plant is Drimiopsis maculata, from Africa.

Would drimiopsis get out of control in the ground? It would look good in my understorey area but I don't want to plant anything that is hard to control. When my MIL gave me the plant it was so tightly packed with bulbs it had split the pot. She had already divided it several times over the years.

I like the fern but I wish it was in the ground. It did have more shade originally but a grevillea planted above it died so now it gets too much sun which burns the fronds a bit.

I havent had any problems with my drimiopsis in the ground, the clumps normally only get about 30-40cms wide. theyre alot harder to keep in pot though because they keep running out of space for the bulbs
