There are multiple borers and the damage they do varies. Baldo has written that his borers only go a short way into the canes. In my garden, I've found larvae four or five inches down. (Those HAVE to be two different critters.) Yesterday I found a really disgusting nest of ants in a rose cane; carpenter ants tending their young. (Gone now). Something I've tried to get numbers on, and have had zero success with, is timing when my borers get active. When I've done a HT pruning in early January, the cut surfaces ahve hardened off and the borers haven't been a problem. But when I pruned when the local rose society recommended (to get HT blooms for a scheduled show), I found most canes were bored. That implied an early to mid April borer activity here. Sealers worked, BTW. That late Easter freeze two years ago knocked my plannings for a loop and the critters haven't had many good canes to go into for the past two years.

Thanks Shazam for the suggestions. I did actually pick up some Sevin today, but it was too windy here to use it. Instead I went and picked off all the larvae and adults that I could find on the lilies, and went searching for weevils too since I was out with a pail of soapy water to drown them in. Hopefully tomorrow I can get out and try to battle some more. I have 3 morden sunrise roses that have been absolutely covered in buds, but I have had barely any blooms since the weevils decimiate each and every one. My other rose bushes have weevil damage, but some of the blooms actually do manage to open, although they don't look as nice as they could. I will work on getting the bark mulch moved away from the roses, but how far do I need to move it? My rose bushes are in the middle of mixed beds, won't the weevils just over winter a few feet over and then crawl back over to the roses?

I've heard people knock this rose for shattering fast, but I love mine. It's situated so that it's the first rose I see walking down my steps, and is almost always in bloom.

Those palm trees are too close to the house. They are having to grow at a funky angle. How much sunlight will that area receive? You don’t want anything there that can’t take harsh direct light during the hottest part of the day. I think your side walk needs to come down even with the retainer wall. The brick and plain sidewalk look odd. And you need more bulk, like paver stones, where the small stones are placed to keep the mulch in place. Maybe add a rock garden with water feature and some pretty plants for your plant zone that attracts butterflies and humming birds.
